Yūya Sakaki (榊遊矢Sakaki Yūya) is the main protagonist of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime. He is a born-entertainer who attends the You Show Duel School to advance his Dueling expertise and become an "Entertainment Duelist", a specific type of professional Duelist, similar to his father. He has three known dimensional counterparts: Yūto (from the Xyz Dimension), Yūgo (from the Synchro Dimension), and Yūri (from the Fusion Dimension). He is one of the Lancers and is one of the reincarnations of the Demon Duelist Zarc.
Yūya appears as an average height boy for his age. He has hair that is maroon, following with green on top of it. He wears dark-ish yellow goggles that a blue star on the right-eyed lens and wears it on his head that he uses to cover his eyes when he's sad or about to get tears in his eyes. His eyes are crimson. He wears a neck belt. He has a blue pendant around his neck. He wears a jacket which is his Maiami Second Junior High School uniform, that he wears it as a cape. He wears pants of his choice that are green with two pockets on both right and left sides. He also wears a brown belt. He wears pink shoes. He wears red wristbands, one on each wrist.
When entering in the Awakened state, Yūya's eyes begin to glow a luminous red, while his hair becomes frizzled and sticks up on end.[1] When the darkness inside Yūya takes over the Awakening, he continuously emits a dark aura from his body.[2]
On occasion, Yūya is rendered in CG. This usually happens when he is riding "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" or any of its evolved forms.[3] His hair and attire's colour scheme is based on the Summoning method that he specializes in, in this case Pendulum Summoning; half green and half orange/red.
During Riding Duels, Yūya wears a Riding Dueling suit. He wears a predominantly red jumpsuit with a secondary white trim and orange markings, and with padded knees. The chest of his jumpsuit is grey. Yūya wears a jacket with the same color scheme as his jumpsuit that flares out above the hips, and black-backed white gloves. His helmet is visorless; Yūya's own googles serve as a substitute.[4]
Later, after absorbing Yūri and being consumed by Zarc,[5] Yūya transforms into a monstrous form resembles a mixture between a dragon-man and a demon. His body turns grey and become bulkier with number of spikes prostrating from his shoulders, arms, and ankles while his eyes turn bright yellow. His face become veiny and his ears are replaced by wing-like appendages. In this form, he no longer wear shirt or rollerblades and has a large pair of black demonic wings on his back. When he regained control over his body, Yūya's eyes returned to his normal red eyes.[6]

Personality
Yūya is a fun-loving and energetic boy. He is very theatrical and loves to entertain people, traits he has inherited from his father, Yūshō Sakaki. He idolized and loved his father very much and wishes to become an entertainer like him one day. After his father disappeared during an important match, Yūya was left heartbroken and traumatized by the event because his beloved father was labeled as a "coward". To cope with his father's disappearance and beat people to insulting him about his father, Yūya acts like a fool, leaving his friends and other people baffled by Yūya's behavior and believes he doesn't take things seriously. Because his father was so famous, his friends and other people seems to have high expectations of Yūya to live up to his father's reputation while simultaneously quick to bring up Yūshō's "cowardice" or scold him for his clownish actions. Only after Yūya defeated Strong Ishijima, he finally dropped his foolish acts.[7][8]

Yūya has shown to have a good deal less self confidence. As such, when he finds himself cornered or something happens that breaks his confidence, he tends to pull his goggles down so nobody can see his eyes.[9] At times like these, he ends up recalling lessons from his father, or relies on support from his friends or mother to regain his confidence and continue the Duel.[10][11][12][13]
Initially, Yūya was more emotionally vulnerable regarding Pendulum Summoning, believing it to be a power granted only to him. When both Reiji[14] and Shingo[15]Pendulum Summoned, he was speechless, but coaching from Shūzō[16]and the lessons he learned during his Qualification Duels have turned him into a Duelist that enjoys the challenge set before, which also nurtured his self-confidence.[17]
Yūya believes that Dueling is for the purpose of making people happy, and he is disgusted when it is used for hurting people and much worse, for war.[18] He will protest any duel conducted with violence, hatred and anger. However, confrontations with his dimensional counterparts and learning about the four dimensions as well as the crisis between them start making him doubt his ability to entertain people with Dueling.[19] As Yūya becomes more involved in the Interdimensional War, added with repeated incidents of triggering The Awakening and continuous problems that he faced one to another, Yūya progressively finds it more difficult to entertain with dueling, becoming more vulnerable to emotional breakdown, easily depressed and even hostile and impatient. While Yūya's desire to protect his friends became stronger, this unfortunately also made Yūya without himself realizing started to slowly losing his track of his way of Dueling, focusing on becoming stronger to defeat his enemies rather than for the sake of bringing happiness to all people.
Yūya's rematch against Jack made him learned how to convey his belief through Duel, and realized that he is able to grow thanks to his friends and everyone he encountered and Dueled, and he could never bring happiness to people alone. From this point onwards, Yūya regained his philosophy and determination to fulfil his goal by trying to connect with his opponent through Duel with the Dueling he believes in regardless who his opponent is. Due to this growth, Yūya can be charismatic in his own way, mainly due to his kindness, generosity, determination, and philosophy as Entertainment Duelist that both directly and indirectly influence others. His strong attachment and loyalty to those he cares for and staying true to his belief also managed to turn a lot of people into friends and admirers. While some of his enemies may sees this trait as naivety, some also respect his determination as a fellow Duelist.

When Awakened, Yūya is collected and cold, speaking no more than necessary. However, when witnessing Yūto's memories of the Academia's attack on the Xyz Dimension and seeing the Knight of Duels being turned into cards by the Obelisk Force in front of him, Yūto's hatred towards the Fusion Dimension spills into Yūya, turning him even more aggressive and ruthless. This is worsened when the darkness inside him consumed him, making him desire to harm his enemies to the point he enjoys it, as shown when he smiled maliciously at the Obelisk Force.[20]
Etymology
The syllable "Yū" (遊) in this character's name comes from the "Yū" in the Rōmaji of "Yu-Gi-Oh!" (遊戯王Yūgiō, lit. King of Game) and past 4 main characters' first or last names of the series (Note: There are other ways to write "Yūya" in Japanese). Sakaki (榊), also known as Cleyera japonica, means "Divine Tree" in Japanese.
Yūya's name may also derived from Yūya, a powerful Egyptian courtier during the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt, father of Tiye, the Great Royal Wife of Amenhotep III. When the latter died, his son ruled the Ancient Egypt as Amenhotep IV, but later changed his royal name for Akhenaten, whose namesake may have inspired Akhenaden, the father of Priest Seto and uncle of Atem.
History
Background

In his childhood, Yūya sat by himself crying when his father, Yūshō Sakaki came in to cheer him up. He gave him advice on laughing whenever he felt down and used Yūya's pendant to explain that if Yūya was happy, the happiness would swing back at him.[21] At another unknown point in his childhood, he lost his Pendant in a park, and cried when he was unable to find it. His father learned of the incident and reaffirmed the statement that Yūya should look up and laugh whenever he felt like crying. Yūya did so, locating his Pendant hanging from a tree branch.[22]

At a later point, before the duel against Strong Ishijima, Yūya got worried since his father's opponent is strong, but Yūshō assured his son that he will do his best, so Yūya must do his best to at Junior Youth Championship. Yūya said that he wanted to be a Duelist just like his father when he grew up, and his father said Yūya's got it a bit wrong. He said instead of being like him, Yūya should always be himself.[23] Yūya and his mother, Yōko Sakaki, watched the final Duel between Yūshō and Strong Ishijima. When Yūshō did not show up, Yūya ran to the bottom of the stands, saying that his father would appear, and challenged Ishijima to a Duel until his father arrived. Yōko pulled Yūya from the stands as he continued to protest.[24] As the resulted, he was bullied for these remarks, constantly being called as "a son of a coward", even being challenged to a Duel directly by Gen Ankokuji, one of the disciples of the Gongenzaka Dōjō who admired Ishijima and wanted to represent him, but he was protected by Gongenzaka.[25]
For the past few years before the story, Yūya trained hard his Dueling skill and asked for help to Gongenzaka's Dōjō to find him opponents for Duel so he can fulfill the requirements to enter the Junior Youth Championship.[26]

Yūya and Gongenzaka were engaged in a Duel in You Show Duel School to recruit future students, they were interrupted when Yuzu accidentally broke the Solid Vision machine. Nico Smiley then came and offered Yūya a chance to fulfill his desire of Dueling Strong Ishijima in his father's place, but this upset Yūya who was reminded of his father's disappearance. Eventually, he left the school and sat by himself, remembering the time when his father told him to stay positive when he felt down. He later made his way to the Dueling arena to participate in Ishijima's Duel, dressed as a clown. Yūya sneaked up behind Ishijima and taunted him behind his back before revealing himself, much to Ishijima's shock and anger. Yūya apologized for his actions before commencing the Duel.

He put up a good performance for the half of the Duel until Ishijima managed to counter Yūya's play with his own Action Card, "Miracle". "Odd-Eyes" was then destroyed by "Barbarian King", pushing Yūya to a corner and making him lose hope until he remembered his father's words, regaining the courage to continue. Suddenly, his pendant reacted with three of his Effect Monsters - "Stargazer Magician", "Timegazer Magician" and "Odd-Eyes Dragon", transforming them into Pendulum Monsters, while "Odd-Eyes Dragon" was transformed into "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon".[27] Using his his new monsters to support "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon," he destroyed "Barbarian King" and wiped out Ishijima in a single attack, winning the Duel. Afterwards, he was swarmed by people asking about the Pendulum Summon that he'd performed, though he seemed unaware of the details himself and didn't seem to remember exactly what had happened.

The You Show Duel School received a flood of applicants, all eager to learn how to Pendulum Summon. Yūya and Yuzu had an exhibition Action Duel. On his second turn, Yūya attempted to Pendulum Summon again, but the Summon failed. Theorizing that it might only work when he was in a pinch, he urged Yuzu to attack him with all she had, but the Summon failed again and Yuzu defeated him. He showed Yuzu and the applicants his Pendulum Cards afterwards, annoying the applicants as they thought that Yūya might have cheated against Strong Ishijima and they couldn't use the Summon without the Pendulum Cards. All but Tatsuya left, though the boy believed in Yūya, and Gongenzaka encouraged Yūya to support his fans. Yūya agreed, vowing to master Pendulum Summoning.[28] He finally did so, replicating the conditions of his Duel with Strong Ishijima after 271 Duels against Gongenzaka, though the ordeal left him sleeping through his math class the next day.
After the day ended, Tatsuya, Ayu and Futoshi arrived, eager to see the Pendulum Summon. They were interrupted by a student of the Leo Duel School, Shingo Sawatari, who admitted he was a big fan of Yūya's Pendulum Summoning, and after learning that they were going to see a Pendulum Summon, offered the use of the Center Field at LDS. Shingo showed them around, and Yūya was impressed by the various courses the school had on different Summoning forms. At the Duel Field, three of Shingo's friends approached them, and Shingo asked if he could show them Yūya's Pendulum Cards. Yūya was reluctant, but he agreed, holding out "Stargazer Magician" and "Timegazer Magician". Shingo swiped the cards and showed them to his friends, then he stated that he was keeping them for himself, suggesting that Yūya Duel to get them back. With Yuzu, Ayu, Tatsuya and Futoshi held hostage, Yūya had no choice.

The Duel didn't go well for Yūya since not only there were Traps that reduced the ATK of his monster but they also put his friends at risk. Shingo then proceeded to use the two Pendulum Monsters that he had stolen to Pendulum Summon three monsters himself, much to Yūya's shock.[29] Yūya began to grieve for the sake of his friends, but regained his confidence when he drew "Block Spider", using it in conjunction with "Mimiclay" against Shingo to defend himself. Yūya later used "Empty Fishing" to regain his two Pendulum Monsters and used them to save his friends from falling before defeating Shingo. After losing to Yūya, Shingo sent his friends to take back "Timegazer Magician" and "Stargazer Magician", but they were intercepted by a boy named Sora Shiun'in, who knocked them unconscious with his lollipop stick and declared himself wanting to be Yūya's apprentice.[30]
The next day, Yūya woke up after having a dream about being the world champion, only to find that Sora had followed him home, eating breakfast with him and his mother after he sweet-talked the latter. As the day went on, Sora continued to follow Yūya to school, randomly appearing in front of him and calling him "Teacher", even to the You Show Duel School where he asked Yūya to Duel him so he can see the Pendulum Summon. Yūya at first refused, but after Sora pleaded with his cute face, Yūya agreed under condition that if he win, Sora must stop pestering him and if Sora win, he can become Yūya's apprentice and following him around.

As the Duel started, Yūya seemed to easily gain the upper hand until Sora performed Fusion Summon, summoning Death-Toy Scissors Bear,[31] destroying Yūya's "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon". However, Yūya able to turn the tide after realizing that "Odd-Eyes" didn't go to Graveyard, but back to Extra Deck, countering Sora's monster with his Pendulum Monsters and won the Duel. After the Duel, he reminded Sora of his promise, so Sora instead decided to become his friend, calling him by his first name. Despite Yūya's protests, an enthusiastic Shūzō accepted Sora into the You Show Duel School and went to get the paperwork. Yūya asked Sora where he'd learnt to Fusion Summon, with Sora claiming it was normal from where he came from, confusing Yūya that Sora might be a foreigner.[32]

Several days after defeating Shingo, Yūya and his friends were eating ice cream while waiting for Yuzu and Ayu, but only Yuzu came back. Ayu told him that Yuzu was trying to stop Shingo from getting his revenge on Yūya, prompting Yūya raced to the warehouse where Yuzu had been, finding her unharmed, only for Yuzu to ask was he the one who defeated Shingo, much to his confusion.[33] The next day, Yūya and the others were studying at You Show Duel School as usual, but most found the lesson boring since Shūzō explained things they already knew. Sora offers Yūya his sweets, but Yūya refused out of fear that Yuzu will smack him, but was surprised when Yuzu didn't and instead was lost in thought. Yuzu then abruptly asked Shūzō if their school taught Xyz Summoning, much to Yūya's and Shūzō's confusion. After it was clarified that they didn't, they heard Gongenzaka arguing with someone. Confused, Yūya found him with Shingo's friends, who all claimed that Yūya had attacked Shingo and hospitalized him, much to Yūya's surprise and confusion, and furthermore, Yuzu had also witnessed the incident.

Yūya denied that he'd attacked Shingo, but the conversation only intensified when Himika became involved. His friends were convinced that Yūya had not attacked Shingo, even Yuzu, who had been doubting her own conclusions. Regardless, she stated, Shingo had lost and their School's name tarnished. The group realized that Himika was using the incident as an opportunity to add the You Show Duel School to LDS when she proposed a Duel between schools, best out of three. If her Duelists won, she would buy the You Show Duel School. Yūya vowed to fight, refusing to let the Duel School that his father had founded with the intent to teach Entertainment Dueling be taken over by one interested in money and power. He requested to Duel first, despite Sora trying to do so, and ended up facing Hokuto Shijima, LDS's top Xyz-user.[34]

Hokuto's tactic counter Yūya's Pendulum Summoning by returning "Odd-Eyes" to Yūya's hand, as well as barring Yūya's way when he attempted to find Action Cards. Hokuto's expertise with the Action Field puts Yūya at a disadvantage and purposefully in danger, and even though Yūya manages to withstand Hokuto's monster until it runs out of Overlay Units, Hokuto simply brings out another, then uses the first one as Xyz Material to Xyz Summon "Sacred Ptolemys Messier 7". Hokuto again timed his attacks to hurt Yūya, resulting in a building collapsing around Yūya as he grabbed an Action Card.

Yūya was able to survive, commenting that if he had fled, it wouldn't have been exciting, and he countered with the card, inflicting damage to Hokuto for the first time. Hokuto went into a rage for being damaged for the first time in 40 Duels, and reduced Yūya to 200 Life Points, raining down meteors on Yūya, who was only just able to dodge them. Yūya proceeded to switch his "Stargazer Magician" and "Entermate Turn Toad" around with "Entermate Trampolynx", allowing him to counter "Pleiades'" effect and keep "Odd-Eyes" on the field, then used "Magical Star Illusion" to boost the ATK of all of his monsters by their total Levels. The effect was applied to Hokuto as well, but since his Xyz Monsters had Ranks rather than Levels, he received no bonus, and Yūya proceeded to wipe out the rest of Hokuto's Life Points.[35]
The next two Duels resulted with Yuzu lost against Masumi Kōtsu[36] and Gongenzaka tied against Yaiba Tōdō. A furious Himika proposed a tie-breaker Duel between Yūya and Masumi, the two winners, and Yūya prepared to face her, but before they could begin, a mysterious grey-haired Duelist, Reiji Akaba arrived.[37] He claimed that he would put an end to this. Yūya seemed to be in the lead due to Reiji's permanent magic card that reduced his own LP. However, Reiji turned the tide to his favour when he used counter magic to not only regain his LP but also perform Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Summon all at one turn.[38] Everyone were shocked further when Reiji also able to Pendulum Summon, cornering Yūya. Before they could continue, Reiji received a call from his employee, Nakajima, and he gave Yūya the win. He told Yūya his full name when asked before he departed.[39]
Duel Against Shūzō

Yūya was shell-shocked that Reiji had been able to Pendulum Summon. Tatsuya encouraged Yūya to teach them about his Pendulum Summoning, but Yūya yelled that Pendulum Summoning wasn't his anymore and he tried to run off, only for Shūzō to stop him. Shūzō told him off for running, pointing out that nothing wouldn't change if Yūya fled, despite the fact that other people could Pendulum Summon had shown up. Shūzō pointed out that one day the world could be overflowing with Pendulum Cards, given Reiji's status as the CEO of the Leo Corporation. He ordered Yūya to Duel him, so that he could beat Yūya's pessimistic personality into shape. They Dueled in Yūshō Sakaki's signature field, and Shūzō told him he'd show Yūya what a real Entertainment Duel was like. Yūya protested at his Duels being called fake, and Shūzō claimed that Yūya's Duels were not comparable to his or Yūshō's. Forcing Yūya to reveal his hand, Shūzō harassed him, and Yūya Dueled for a turn without using his Pendulums, despite having both his Magicians in his hand. When Yūya's attack failed, he claimed that Yūshō's Duels were more entertaining than Shūzō's, a fact that Shūzō agreed with.

Shūzō pointed out that Yūshō's Duels weren't always like that and initially attracted criticism, but eventually, the jeers became cheers. He told Yūya that to open a door to a new world, one with courage had to push it, and Yūya had opened a new door called "Pendulum." But they wouldn't be exclusive to him anymore, soon anyone could Pendulum Summon. To prove it, he took control of the Magicians and used them to Pendulum Summon more monsters. Shūzō commented that Yūshō would have been overjoyed and improved his skills, while Yūya was shocked instead, and encouraged Yūya to set and example and hone his skills. but ended his turn without attacking and returned the Magicians to Yūya (due to his card conditions). Regaining his confidence and taking a step forward with courage, Yūya Pendulum Summon three monsters and used them to defeat Shūzō.[40]
Pre-Maiami Championship
Yūya heard from Shingo of LDS developing Pendulum cards.
The next day, as he messily ate his lunch with Yuzu, Shingo approached them, commenting that he heard Yūya attacked someone again, something that Yūya denied. Though Shingo revealed that he knew Yūya wasn't the culprit since it was said that the attacker used Xyz Summon. He also called Yūya's Pendulum Summoning cowardly as only Yūya could do it. Shingo vowed to get his hands on the new Pendulum Cards being developed by LDS and defeat Yūya, saying that he'd be waiting at the Junior Youth Championship before departing.
Yūya depressed that no one wants to Duel him.
Yūya remembered that he couldn't join the Championship, as his win rate was only 56% rather than the required sixty. Yūya tried to find someone to Duel all day, but they all refused. Tatsuya worked out that if Yūya defeated his next four opponents, he'd be able to qualify. Yūya bemoaned the fact that his win against Ishijima was causing people to think he'd get a free pass, which was completely a misunderstanding since it was only an exhibition match. He then realised that there were four of his friends right there - but they all refused; Ayu, Tatsuya and Futoshi as they were only in elementary school, and Yuzu because she and Yūya had Dueled many times before and she'd already qualified. Yuzu suggested asking Gongenzaka for help, but Yūya decided against it because Gongenzaka had helped him too much in the past and Yūya wanted to get stronger by himself.

He arrived at You Show to find Nico Smiley there, who offered him a free pass into the Junior Youth Championship as the Duel Committee acknowledge Yūya's victory against Ishijima. Yūya declined, not wanted to be given special treatment, but he was able to get Nico to set up his next four Duels. He then was asked by Shūzō to find Yuzu, and he found her with Sora and Masumi at the warehouse. He was immediately interrogated by both Masumi and Yuzu regarding the Black-Masked Duelist, but had no clue what they were talking about. Sora mediated the situation by distracting Masumi and explained to Yūya that he'd been teaching Yuzu to Fusion Summon. When he explained that he'd found his next opponents, Sora asked Yūya about entering the Championship, and Yūya explained that if he won six Duels in a row, Sora would be able to enter.[41]
As Yūya was due to Duel at the Quiz School the next day, after having several of Michio's recipes that had been prepared by his mother, he stayed up late watching quiz shows, but this had a negative effect on his concentration. The next day, while having a walk, he was suddenly pursued by three LDS students led by Mr. Sawatari, who still believed Yūya to be the person who had attacked Shingo. Fleeing, unaware of the reason behind his pursuit, Yūya was saved by the intervention of an Xyz Duelist, Shun Kurosaki, who proceeded to Xyz Summon a monster that dealt real damage to the LDS students and seal them in cards, while knocking Yūya himself out. Nico Smiley later found Yūya, who babbled about a monster that destroyed the area, but there was no visible evidence of the encounter. Nico asked if Yūya had been sleeping, and Yūya admitted that he'd stayed up all night doing quizzes, dismissing what happened as a dream.[42]

Yūya then Dueled Eita Kyuando from the Clarity Duel School in quiz-based Action Duel. Yūya struggled with the field's Action Cards, which all revolve around quiz questions, due to always ending up with the subjects he is worst at. Yūya lost most of his Life Points due to the "Quiz" Action Cards, "Quiz Monkey", and "Sphin-Quiz", and this worsened when Eita activated an Action Card that brought the Action Field to the next stage, which is a quick-fire quiz cart ride, leaving Eita with more life points and Yūya with less. As Yūya is seemingly pushed into a corner, he managed to use a wrong answer to an Action Trap against Eita to deal a large amount of damage him, before using the effects of "Entertainment Resurrection - Reborn Force", "Entermate Cast Change", and "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" to win the Duel.[43][44]

The next day, Yūya remembered Nico Smiley congratulating him from his two recent Duels. Yūya noted that Nico didn't seem so excited, with Nico replying that it's the Pro Duelists' job to be excited. He told Yūya that the Entertainment Duelists surpassed the wildest imagination of the audience. Yūya took his pendant off his neck and swung it around. He restated surpassing the audience's imagination and how his father stole the hearts of his audience, too. Yūya remembered what Reiji said about seeing further evolution in Pendulum Summoning, and was frustrated about how he couldn't see it, though. He went to Shūzō and asked what he should do, with Shūzō replying that he should move forward. Yūya commented that if he didn't know which path to take, he couldn't move forward.
Yūya bumped into Hokuto.
Later, while reading a magazine, Yūya remarked on how Yuzu was learning Fusion Summoning from Sora. He bumped into Hokuto and Yaiba who were in hurry to the warehouse where Masumi found the culprit behind the LDS attack, with Yūya decided to follow them. The trio arrived at the crime scene, only to find Masumi, Sora, and Yuzu with her cards scattered across the ground. Yūya asked Yuzu what was wrong, but she only sobbed, saying she didn't know what's going on anymore. The LDS security then arrived, prompting Sora to suggest for them to leave before getting involved. Yaiba remarked to Yūya that he still needed two more matches to join the Junior Youth Championship. Yūya asked how he knew that, and Yaiba replied that he wanted to say good luck, although it might be difficult for him, and he left. Yūya then noticed Yuzu's "Fusion" card on the ground, and guessed she accidentally forgot about it.[45]
Yūya was due to Duel Mieru Hōchun the next day, but slept in and arrived late, bumping his head on his desk and mixing up his cards at his house and cartwheeling down the stairs to land in a position to see up Mieru's skirt. Mieru whacked him on the head with her crystal apple for that. Yūya's bad luck continued into the Duel, drawing high-Level monsters and low Scales, leaving him with a dead hand and forcing him to pass, allowing Mieru to take an early lead with her Reserve Effect Monsters, and then her Ritual Monster, "Holy Prediction Princess Tarotrei." Fortunately, Yūya was able to draw "Timegazer Magician," allowing him to Pendulum Summon five powerful monsters and boost "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" to 3700 ATK, but his monsters were all frozen in Defense Position by the effects of Mieru's Reserve Monsters, which "Tarotrei" could freely trigger. Mieru then had "Tarotrei" read Yūya's fortune, the Towers card, which indicated a destructive future for Yūya. Mieru told him to stop the match to avoid that future.[46]

Yūya refused to let his dream be ended there, but Mieru used her Reserve Monsters to set up a combo that wiped the field of his Defense Position monsters and dealt him damage. She continued to urge him to surrender, even sealing Yūya's draw with "Draw Lock," which Yūya would need to dispel with an Action Card. Yūya began to search, eventually finding one as the chandelier of the Duel Field began to collapse around him. Sprinting hard, Yūya was able to grab the card and survive the fall, apparently having changed his future. He drew on the next turn, but he'd drawn Yuzu's "Fusion," as was disheartened, believing that he couldn't use it. He then received a vision of a sealed monster, and he Pendulum Summoned again, then returned his "Magicians" to his hand and Summoned "Stargazer Magician," then fused it with "Odd-Eyes" to create "Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon," which was able to attack multiple times and win the Duel. He returned Yuzu's "Fusion" to her, and they shared a touching moment that was broken up by the infatuated Mieru, inciting swift rebuke from Yuzu.[47]
Waking up the next day, Yūya found both his house and the Duel School empty save Nico Smiley, who took him to the Gongenzaka Dojo to Duel Gongenzaka. Gongenzaka revealed that in order to get a serious match from Yūya, he'd arranged it so that they were both one win away from entering the Junior Youth Championship, much to Yūya's shock. He didn't know if he could defeat Gongenzaka like that, but their Duel commenced on the "Sword's Cemetery" field that Gongenzaka had Dueled Yaiba on. Gongenzaka brought out his "Big Benkei" early, and Yūya fought back with "Entermate Silver Claw," and Action Cards. But on his next turn, Gongenzaka proceeded to Synchro Summon "Superheavy Koujin Susano-O." Yūya was shocked that Gongenzaka had Synchro Summoned, and even more so when his father attempted to stop the match, believing that Gongenzaka had stolen the technique. Gongenzaka revealed that he had instead requested instruction from Yaiba, and he drove Yūya back with "Susano-O."[48]

Yūya assembled a hasty defense by Pendulum Summoning, and he was only barely able to survive the turn. He Pendulum Summoned again, bringing out "Discover Hippo" so that he could Advance Summon "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon," and was able to use his "Entermate Lizardraw" to draw "Entermate Trump Witch," thus allowing him to Fusion Summon "Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon." Though he defeated "Susano-O," Gongenzaka was able to revive it, so Yūya had to leap for an Action Card to pay the cost of his "Dangerous Draw," gambling everything on his next draw. He drew "Big Return," which allowed him to re-use his "Trump Witch's" effect to Fusion Summon "Beast-Eyes Pendulum Dragon," attacking to win the Duel. His friends, who had been secretly watching the Duel, congratulated him afterwards, including Gongenzaka, who reassured Yūya that he still had a chance to enter the Championship.[49]
The day of the Championship, Yūya stood on the bridge looking at the Dueling Arena, while swinging the pendant in front of him. He remembered the day before his father's Duel with Strong Ishijima. After the recollection, Yōko chided Yūya, telling him that she just got a call from Yuzu. She said that Yūya should be worrying there, pointing at the stadium. At the stadium, Yūya arrived just in time, butting heads with Gen Ankokuji, and he was selected to give the oath of fair play. Though he initially messed up, he composed himself and gave a speech about his father, earning the applause of the stadium. He was shocked to see Shun, the Duelist that had saved him from the LDS top team, standing among LDS students, who claimed that Shun had always been one of them. Yūya learned that his first match was to be against Shingo the next day. He watched Futoshi, Ayu, and Yuzu's Duels, supporting them all.[50][51][52]

On the second day, a man carrying Gongenzaka's sash ran into Yūya, and another man snatched the sash up. Yūya and the first man gave chase, but Yūya had been lured into a trap by the two, who had been sent by Ankokuji to harm Yūya, thus distracting Gongenzaka during the match. Yūya was able to not only defeat them and get the sash back, but also entertain them with his "Hippo" cards. He arrived at the match and threw Gongenzaka's sash to him, and watched as Gongenzaka proceeded to defeat Ankokuji.[53]
First Round
Yūya summoned Odd-Eyes, Scorpio, and Drum Kong.
Yūya was up next against Shingo, who vowed to defeat him based on his misplaced grudges: first for stealing his Pendulum cards and use it to defeat him (which actually he himself was the one who stole it), second for having an Xyz user doppelgänger to hurt him (which was actually done by Yūto and Shingo wasn't hurt from the incident), and lastly was for attacking his father (which was actually done by Shun). Yūya was worried when Shingo claimed that Pendulum Summoning would be Yūya's downfall, remembering Shingo's promise to obtain LDS developed Pendulum Cards. Shingo used his new "Yosenju" cards to prevent Yūya from getting Action Cards, but Yūya was able to Pendulum Summon and counterattack with "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Entermate Drumming Kong." However, true to his words, Shingo proceeded to Pendulum Summon "Mayosenju Daibakaze" and complete his "Dizzying Winds of Yosen Village" combo, using the effects of "Dizzying Winds of Yosen Village" and "Yosen Whirlwind" to return Yūya's Pendulum cards to the Deck.

Despite being cornered, with Pendulum Summoning being used against him, Yūya was enjoying the Duel, setting his remaining cards and ending his turn, then dashing off to look for Action Cards, vowing that the Duel had only just begun.[54] Yūya was able to rouse the crowd by drawing "Magician's Card," replenishing his hand. He brought out "Odd-Eyes" again and boosted it over the ATK of "Daibakaze", but was unable to destroy it. He then used the effect of "Entermate Trump Witch" to Fusion Summon "Beast-Eyes Pendulum Dragon," and again traded blows with "Daibakaze." Shingo obtained an Action Card that would win him the Duel should "Beast-Eyes" be destroyed, but Yūya had found "Miracle," allowing him to use the effect of "Beast-Eyes" to win the Duel. Afterwards, Shingo generously offered to Duel Yūya any time, and they waved to the crowd as Yūya mused that this was the type of Duel that he'd been wanting, and wondered if he'd gotten closer to his father.[55]
He and Yuzu watched Sora's Duel with Shun worriedly, since they knew Shun to have been the serial attacker on LDS. He recognized Shun's monsters from when he'd encountered him, including "Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon," and warned Sora to be careful, proven correct when "Rise Falcon," decimated Sora's field.[56] He watched in horror as the Duel continued, turning the Action Field into a raging battlefield. As the Duel reached its climax, with Shun claiming victory Sora was injured by a falling building and hospitalized.[57]

He remained with Yuzu and Gongenzaka at the hospital to keep an eye on Sora, where the three of them compared the facts, and Yūya learned about Yūto, a Duelist who resembled him and the real culprit behind the attack on Shingo, who somehow disappeared whenever her bracelet is glowing. Yūya mused that the conflict between Sora's people and Shun's seemed to be larger than an inter-school rivalry, but before they could talk further, they overheard the guards looking for Sora, who had escaped. After calling Shūzō, Yūya headed off to Central Park, finding Sora Dueling Yūto. He questioned Sora of his reason and tried to persuade him to rest by telling him there will be next time to Duel, but Sora insisted there will be no next time in real battle. Hearing Yūto's intention to defeat Sora as the first step to save his friend, Ruri, Yūya decided to join the Duel to protect Sora.[58]

Yūya Pendulum Summoned "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" on his first turn, but to his surprise, he experienced a burning sensation in his chest as it faced off against "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon." He attacked with the intent to destroy both monsters and revive "Odd-Eyes" next turn, but Yūto blocked the attack, playing around the effect of "Timegazer Magician." Sora angrily told Yūya to get lost, claiming that Yūto was his prey. Yūya demanded answers, revealing what Yuzu had told him. Before Sora could continue, he was returned to the Fusion Dimension forcibly. With Sora disappeared, Yūto no longer has any reason to continue the Duel and both decided to call off the Duel. Yūto then explained about the Four Dimensions to Yūya as well as the destruction of his homeland at the hands of Fusion Dimension. Yūya was skeptical, but told Yūto that Dueling is not a tool for conflict, but to bring happiness to people.

They were interrupted by the arrival of a Duelist on a D-Wheel, who crashed into a streetpost, and revealed that he too resembled Yūya and Yūto,[59] whom Yūto referred as “Pawn of Fusion”. The Duelist stated that his name is Yūgo and challenged Yūto for a rematch since they were interrupted before. Yūya watched the Duel in shock as the Duelists ran around agily, and experienced the same burning sensation when Yūgo, a Synchro user, called out "Clear Wing Synchro Dragon." The sensation intensified when Yūto retaliated with "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon," causing the two Duelists to seemingly become possessed and violent. Realizing this wasn't right and objected for them to use Duel to relinquish their hatred, Yūya interfered by first trying to convince Yūto.

Yūya managed to calm Yūto down by reminding him of his homeland during its peaceful times, but was unsuccessful in calming Yūgo, who proceeded with his battle phase. Before the shockwave could hit Yūya who was defending Yūto behind him, Yūto pushed Yūya aside, taking the shockwave in his stead that also defeated him. Yūya quickly rushed to Yūto’s side to help him, but then his “Odd-Eyes” and Yūto’s “Dark Rebellion” resonated, engulfing them in a bright light. Yūto entrusted Yūya with his “Dark Rebellion”, telling him to bring smiles with Duel using his power before he and Yūgo disappeared. Yuzu, who shortly arrived on the scene, found Yūya collapsed.[60]
Second Round
Yūya awoke from his sleep.
Yūya remained unconscious for two days, and when he finally awoke, he was surprised to hear it. Yuzu informed him that the first round of the Maiami Championship was ending today. He learned that Mieru had lost in an OTK and that Futoshi had also been defeated by Reira, who had used Synchro Summoning this time. When Yuzu mentioned that he might know all about Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Summoning, Yūya told her what Yūto had told him about the world being made up of Four Dimensions, and that the Fusion Dimension, where Sora lived, and the Xyz Dimension, where Yūto and Shun lived, were at war.

He then told her about Yūgo, who also looked like him, and who Yūto had called a "Pawn of Fusion". He theorized that maybe Yūgo had been the one who captured Ruri, then went to look at the "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" card Yūto had given him, telling Yuzu that Yūto had given it to him after saving him from "Clear Wing Synchro Dragon", but he remembered nothing after that. He also wasn't sure what happened to Yūto, or why he gave him "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon". He expressed his confusion about why both Yūto and Yūgo looked just like him, and was surprised when Yuzu told him that Ruri supposedly also looked like her. He realized that Shun may know something about the four dimensions, and they both went to Centre Court to ask him.

When they arrived, Yūya was greeted by Gongenzaka, who hugged him, and Shūzō, who said that both he and Gongenzaka were really worried about him. Futoshi, Ayu and Tatsuya also arrived and were happy to see that he was okay. Futoshi apologized for losing his Duel against Reira. Yūya consoled him by saying that he should give Reira the shivers next time, until he suddenly remembered Sora claiming that there were no second chances in battle, and lost at words. He then asked to see Shun to Masumi, Hokuto and Yaiba, who were also there, but Yaiba told him that Shun wouldn't even give him the time of day. He suggested that Yūya and his friends should come and watch his next match, and they did. Yūya watched in shock as Isao Kachidoki, Yaiba's opponent, violently attacked Yaiba in competition for Action Cards and emerged as the victor. He was further amazed to discover that he would face Isao in the next round. He reflected that Yūto had told him to make everyone smile with his Dueling, and he resolved to do so against Isao.[61]
After watching Gongenzaka's victory against Yūzō Tanegashima, Yūya proceeded to Duel against Isao. Isao's violent Dueling method put Yūya at a disadvantage since Isao always preventing him from getting any Action Cards by directly attacking him. Isao's monster also turned Yūya's monster's ATK to 0. Yūya finally managed to obtain Action Card, but this came at the cost of his LP being reduced to 100. Cornered and at the edge of defeat, Yūya once again experienced a burning sensation in his chest and then saw a vision of Yūto, during which Yūto's soul merged with Yūya's. After this vision, Yūya's personality drastically changed.

He used the Action Card he got to clear his cards and then Pendulum Summon "Entermate Rakudown" and "Entermate Silver Claw", which he then used to Xyz Summon "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon", much to everyone's shock. Without any hesitation, Yūya used its effect to defeat Isao, which stunned the whole audience. Once the Duel was over, Yūya returned to normal. Seeing Isao kneeling in defeat, Yūya tried to help him stand, but Isao rejected his help. Yūya then turned to his friends and the audience who were shocked by Yūya's actions, making Yūya question himself about what he had done.[62]

The next day, Yūya and the others were watching Yuzu's match. Unlike his friends, Yūya was not very enthusiastic in cheering Yuzu on because he was still depressed with his previous victory against Isao. However, Yūya started to regain his resolve when he saw the smiles on the audiences' faces while watching Yuzu's Dueling and once again remembering Yūto's words to Duel with smiles. Overcoming his depression, Yūya smiled happily at Yuzu when she won, finally regaining his spirit.[63]
Battle Royale

At the final round of the championship, which was a Battle Royale Duel, Yūya was up against two Ryozanpaku Duelists, Ken Umesugi and Makoto Takeda. Like in the Duel against Isao, their violent Dueling methods not only prevented Yūya from getting Action Cards but also prevented him from attacking them. This quickly put Yūya at a disadvantage since he was also afraid of losing himself like when he Dueled Isao, until a LDS transfer student, Dennis Macfield, saved him and joined the Duel as Yūya's tag partner.[64]

Yūya was initially exasperated by Dennis' admiration for his father and him in the middle of their Duel, but as he did so, the LDS Duelist protected him from attacks. With Dennis' help, the tide turned in their favor and Dennis allowed Yūya to finish the Duel. Yūya Pendulum Summoned "Entermate Silver Claw" and "Entermate Whip Viper". The moment he Summoned them, "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" appeared in Yūya's mind, which almost caused him to enter his awakened state, if not for Dennis' moral support. Feeling assured, Yūya successfully summoned "Dark Rebellion" without losing himself and defeated both Ken and Makoto with the help of Dennis' "Entermage Trapeze Magician".[65]

Parting ways with Dennis, Yūya met Shun at the Ancient Ruins. Shun immediately asked Yūya what happened to Yūto and accused the former that he had done something to his comrade since Yūya had Yūto's "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon". Yūya answered that Yūto entrusted the card to him and told him to bring smiles with his Duels. Before Yūya could explain further they were interrupted by the Knight of Duelists, who were Dueling each other and purposely surrounded Shun so their attack would hit him without getting penalized. Yūya, who was beside Shun, also got caught in the attack and blown away. Sora and the Obelisk Force then appeared, shocking Yūya. He called out to Sora, but he was ignored.
While Sora took Shun elsewhere to Duel, the Obelisk Force defeated the Knights of Duels and sealed them into cards, horrifying Yūya. The event triggered a vision of Yūto's memory when Heartland was invaded.[66] Overwhelmed by the memory, Yūya succumbed to his rage and challenge the Obelisk Force. The enemies' monster effects prevented Yūya from using Action Cards or avoiding their attacks. The Obelisk Force then taunted Yūya by mockingly showing the Knight of Duels' Duelists' cards and told him he will share the same fate, enraging Yūya further. As Yūto's memory filled his mind, Yūya and Yūto's soul merged again, causing him to summon "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" and attack Red Obelisk Force. This started to panic the Obelisk Force and they counterattacked with their monsters until Yūya's LP reduced to 800, but despite the damage he took Yūya remained unscathed and instead was smiling wickedly.[67]
Gongenzaka and Mieru took Yūya to the Jungle area where he was restrained by Gongenzaka, Michio, and Teppei while Mieru used her crystal ball to see what was inside Yūya's heart. She found that there were two hearts inside him, along with a pitch black darkness. Yūya went unconscious and later awoke without remembering his duel against the Obelisk Force. He then explained what happened prior to entering the Awakening to Gongenzaka and the others. Hearing Mieru's explanation about the presence of another heart inside him, Yūya realized that the other heart was none other than Yūto and his anger for what happened during Academia's invasion was what triggered his change. This made Yūya wonder why Yūto, who entrusted him "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" so he could make people smile with his Duels, would let him be overwhelmed by so much anger.[68]

As he was resting, Yūya contemplated of Yūto's memories that he had saw and finally understood Yūto's anger and sadness, believing that Yūto wasn't lying when he said to make everyone and their future smile with his Duels and the one who was trying to consume him is the darkness that also within him. This made Yūya afraid for a moment until he was reminded by his father's encouraging words, making him even more resolute to Duel with the way he believed. Deciding to find his other friends out of worry, he and Gongenzaka split up with Michio and Teppei. They were then approached by Dennis who informed them where Yuzu was, but Yuzu was transported with Yūgo through her bracelet's power just as Yūya arrived.[69]

Yūya and Gongenzaka continued their search at the Ancient Ruins, but didn't find Yuzu there and proceeded to the Volcano area, only to find Sora Dueling against Hikage. Yūya immediately asked Sora to stop by shouting at him until Sora finally responded that they would talk after he defeated Hikage, which angered Yūya. Gongenzaka stopped Yūya when he was about to interfere. He pointed at Serena, whom they mistook for Yuzu, Dueling against the Obelisk Force with Tsukikage and Shun. Yūya started to be consumed by the darkness when he witnessed Michio, and Teppei being sealed into cards, followed by Hikage who lost to Sora. This caused Yūya to be momentarily taken over by darkness and he angrily confronted Sora, telling him that he was wrong. However, Yūya returned to his senses after hearing Yūto's voice that reminded him of their wish. Determined to bring back Sora's smile, Yūya challenged Sora to a Duel, which Sora accepted. He took Yūya to another side of the area so no one could interfere with their Duel.[70]
Rematch Against Sora

Believing that Sora's smile when they first Dueled was genuine, Yūya tried to make Sora see the error of his view about Dueling, but Sora just ridiculed Yūya's belief and persisted that Dueling is to continue fighting. This made Yūya question if they were not friends anymore, which Sora confirmed because to him, his goal and victory was more important than friendship. This didn't stop Yūya from trying to change Sora's mind. He Xyz Summoned "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" and Pendulum Summoned "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" with "Antithesis Magician" and "Synthesis Magician". He then used the effects of his "Magicians" to make "Dark Rebellion" a Level 7 monster. Yūya decided to trust Yūto who told him to bring smile with Duel and "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon". He used its effect to destroy two of Sora's three monsters. The Xyz Pendulum Monster excited Sora, and Yūya pointed out Sora's excitement to express that Duel is for fun.

Yūya then attacked using "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon", which Sora countered with the Action Card "Flame Chain" to lower its ATK, but Yūya countered back with his own Action Card, "Flame Power". As the attack of "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon" was about to hit, both Yūya and Sora tried to reach an Action Card, but the Battle Royal reached its time limit, dismissing the Action Field and thus, leaving the Duel unfinished. Yūya finally noticed that the rest of his friends were present as well before calling out to Serena whom he still mistook as Yuzu until Serena made it clear herself. Thinking that Yuzu might have been turned into a card, he turned to Sora, but Sora returned to his own dimension before Yūya could question him. Reiji then arrived with Shingo and both revealed that the Battle Royal served as a test to determine Duelists suitable to fight the Academia and the Fusion Dimension.[71]

Once Reiji revealed that he had been watching the battle and let them fight to determine who could survive the battle against the Academy, Yūya broke into tears as he thought about Michio, Teppei, and all the Duelists who had been turned into cards. A furious Yūya blamed Reiji for what happened to the others and tried to punch him, but Reiji easily caught his fist and instead proposed for them to Duel since they were Duelists, which Yūya accepted. Reiji activated "Future City Heartland" for them to Duel on, which reminded Shun of his homeland tragedy. Reiji asked what happened before at Xyz Dimension, but Shun couldn't say it, prompting Reiji to tell them what happened. However, before Reiji could elaborate any further, both Yūya and Yūto, still in Yūya's body, shouted at him to stop and start their Duel.

Reiji immediately performed Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Summons at once and inflicted 2000 damage to Yūya with "DDD Blaze King Temujin", slightly injuring him. Yūya asked Reiji if he was satisfied with how many people were defeated and how many people survived from the Battle Royale, while declaring that they were not his puppets. Yūya then recalled how Yuzu helped him on his Pendulum Summoning and how she tried hard to become stronger, so he would do the same. He proceeded to Summon "Beast-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon".

Reiji revealed that he knew all along that Sora was from the Academia and speculated that Yūya's ability to Summon two new Fusion Dragons was possibly from Yuzu, who learned Fusion Summon from Sora, which meant that Yūya gained his Fusion Summon ability from the Academia. But Yūya replied that he'd learned Fusion Summoning because he'd seen Yuzu learn Fusion Summoning to defeat Masumi. He managed to destroy all three of Reiji's monsters and inflict 2100 damage to Reiji with "Rune-Eyes". Before Yūya could use "Beast-Eyes" to land the finishing blow, Reiji saved himself by activating the Trap Card "DDD Contract Revision" in order to negate the damage.

Reiji told Yūya that while he understood how strong Yūya's feelings for Yuzu were, feelings alone were not enough in true battle and he formed the Lancers so they could win without such naïve feelings, shocking Yūya. Yūya insisted that he had no intention to become a Lancer, but was surprised when Reiji asked if he didn't want to save Yuzu, implying that Yuzu wasn't sealed in a card. He further goaded Yūya to fight by telling him to defeat him first before rescuing Yuzu from the Academia.[72] Ending his turn, Yūya was shocked when both his "Rune-Eyes" and "Beast-Eyes" were destroyed by Reiji's "DDD Wave King Caesar, leaving his LP at 1800.
Yūya summoned "Dark Rebellion" and "Odd-Eyes".
Yūya once again asked what exactly happened to Yuzu, but Reiji reminded him of their Dueling conditions; Yūya must make him repent by defeating him in Duel in the place of everyone who had been sealed into cards. This brought the memories when Michio and the others were sealed into cards and the tragedy of Xyz Dimension, causing Yūya to nearly enter Berserk Mode, but he barely suppressed it. He then summoned "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" to destroy Reiji's "DDD Wave Oblivion King Caesar Ragnarok", but this came at the cost of "Odd-Eyes" that Reiji had used to increase his monster's ATK, saving his LP.
Yūya lost to Reiji.
Reiji then began his counterattack and successfully destroyed "Dark Rebellion" with "DDD Duo-Dawn King Kali Yuga", reducing Yūya's LP to 800 and also injured Yūya further. Gongenzaka and Mieru intended to help him, but Yūya told them to stay back because this is his, Yuzu's, and Yūto's Duel. He stated his resolution that he would definitely save Yuzu and fulfill his promise with Yūto, declaring he must not lose to someone who would Duel for toying or hurting people. In a last ditch of effort to defeat Reiji, Yūya Xyz Summoned "The Supreme King Black Dragon - Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon" and seemingly gained the upper hand. Unfortunately, Reiji used his monster effect to weaken "Odd-Eyes Rebellion" and increased his monster's ATK to destroy "Odd-Eyes Rebellion", defeating Yūya. Reiji reminded Yūya that he couldn't save Yuzu with his naive resolution, but he would let him go since Yūya's mastery of Pendulum Summoning was necessary for Lancers to fight the Academy. Frustrated at his loss, Yūya swore that he needed to become stronger to save Yuzu.[73]
Duel Against Yōko

Following the closing of the Battle Royale, Yūya and the other survivors of Battle Royale gathered at the stadium where Himika revealed to the audience the truth about what is happening, with Yūya and the others were announced as heroes. Afterwards, Yūya returned Yuzu's clothes to Shūzō and told him what happened to Yuzu. Yōko noticed Yūya's wavering behaviour, especially after Yūya declared he will become stronger and defeat his enemies, which Yōko pointed out by asking does that including Sora. Yōko forcefully challenged Yūya to a duel, and she revealed she was once the leader of a woman's Dueling gang. When a rival gang took one of her friends hostage, it was Yūshō who showed her the importance of fun dueling.[74]

Yōko told her son to never forget his smile no matter what happens, as it's important for him if he wants to make others the same. She encouraged him to make not only Sora, but also everyone to smile just like his father did to her. Following his mother's advice, Yūya regains his entertainment spirit and won against Yōko by using the Smile World from her graveyard. She then gave him the 'Smile World' magic card that bonds her and Yūshō, believing that Yūya would be okay from now on.
The next day, at LDS, Yūya met with Gongenzaka and asked about his injuries, to which Gongenzaka answered it was the result from his father who demanded a match after knowing his mission as a Lancer. Reiji gathered together the Lancers, which now include Reira. Reiji announced they will be going to recruit allies in the Synchro Dimension, where it is revealed Yuzu has been taken to, by using new trans-dimensional Duel Disks that Reiji has modified after researching Yūto's Duel Disk, causing Shun to accuse Yūya had stole it, but was silenced by Yūto who told him to trust Yūya. Yūya, unable to hear Yūto's voice, confused by Shun's sudden surprise but Shun only told him it was nothing. He and the other Lancers then set off for the Synchro Dimension.[75]
Duel Against Securities

When Yūya arrived at the Slum area of Synchro Dimension, only Serena, Shingo, Reira were with him. While wondering about their surroundings and the location of their other comrades, they were intercepted by the Securities who mistook Yūya and Serena as Yūgo and Yuzu, challenging them into Duel, much to Yūya's objection who told them that they have just arrived. The Securities' refusal to listen got on Shingo's nerve, prompting him and Serena to accepted the challenge despite Yūya's effort to calm them down.[76] With Shingo quickly defeated, Yūya has no choice but to Duel all the while trying to cheer up Reira with his Entertainment Dueling and find a way to escape.
Yūya got saved by Crow.
Yūya's knowledge of Action Cards gave him quick advantage of the Duel, but the moment Serena defeated her opponent, more reinforcements arrived, cornering the three of them. Seeing a slit, Yūya told Serena to take Reira and escape while he distract the Securities. Unfortunately, when he did so, Serena's pride caused her to refuse to run away, cornering them even further. Just as they were surrounded by the Securities with no means of escaping, they were saved by Crow Hogan and his four friends riding their D-Wheels, taking them to safety.[77]

Yūya and the others were taken to Crow's hideout, welcomed by one of the children who lives with him, Amanda. Crow expressed his amazement that Yūya and the others were Duelling bravely while protecting Reira, stating that someone who protects children couldn't be a bad guy. Noticing that they were not from the slum, Yūya was about to tell Crow about them, but Crow didn't mind it and allow them to stay until the situation cool off, much to Yūya's gratitude. Two otherchildren who lives with Crow then came bringing some foods and noticed Yūya and Serena whom they mistook as Yūgo and Yuzu. Hearing this information, Yūya and Serena were ready to head out to look for them, but Crow stopped them since they were targeted by the Security. Seeing Yūya's resolute face, Crow offer to look for them in their stead.[78]

After Yūya, Serena, and Shingolistening to the children's explanation about Riding Duel, Securities, Tops, and Commons, Crow returned with no information about Yuzu and Yūgo. Frustrated at being told to wait, Serena and Shingo decided to look for information by themselves despite Yūya's protest that it would make them got separated again. Reira, also wanting to look for Reiji, decided to tag along in their search, but Yūya stopped him while Serena and Shingo left.[79] Waiting for Serena and Shingo to return, Yūya tried to make Reira smile and stop worrying about his brother, but this led to a childish argument with Crow over between food and smile which one represent happiness. The two decided to settle it with a Duel with the children watching. Unfortunately, not long after the battle started, the Security located and arrested them. Noticing that Reira has disappeared, Yūya shouted out Reira's name in panic while struggling against the Securities' hold.[80]
As Yūya and the others were thrown into the car, Serena assured him that Reira is fine because Tsukikage rescued him before the Securities noticed them, much to Yūya's relief. But Yūya became worried again at their present situation. Arriving at the Facility, Yūya, Shingo, Crow, and Shinji were taken to the same cell while Serena was imprisoned in solitary cell. He was reunited with Gongenzaka and Dennis who explained how they were imprisoned with Shun, who was moved into solitary cell after getting into fight with another facility inmates a few days earlier. Yūya and the others quickly got poor treatment from both the guards and inmates alike, and the only way for them to get a better treatment is by bribing the guards with their cards like money, which explained why the guards confiscated their Duel Disks but not their cards.
They were then called by Chojiro Tokumatsu, the leader of the Facility, who demanded for Yūya and the others to give them all of their cards if they want to live in luxury, to which Yūya and the others immediately declined. Yūya persisted that cards should not be easily compared with money and cited his belief that Duel is for fun and give people happiness. This angered Tokumatsu who lost his faith in Dueling for fun after being defeated by Tops Duelists who ganged up on him. The clashing of their ideals led Tokumatsu to challenge Yūya to a Duel. Tokumatsu's lethal combo caused Yūya to significantly lose his LP every time he draw his cards with Tokumatsu himself refused to do any Draw Phase.[81]

Fortunately, Yūya managed to counter the combo after he draw "Entermate Raingoat", negating the damage by sending it to the Graveyard. Yuya activates the effect of "Entermate Teeter Totter Hopper" from the Graveyard, since he sent a card from his hand to the Graveyard, while it was in the Graveyard. This allows him to Special Summon "Teeter Totter Hopper" from the Graveyard in Defense Position. As "Teeter Totter Hopper" was Special Summoned by its own effect, it cannot destroyed by battle once per turn. Yūya's Duel eventually reached out to Tokumatsu and other inmates who were watching the Duel. Regaining his enjoyment for Duelling, Tokumatsu abandoned his previous Duelling strategy and attacked Yūya head on. Using "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Teeter Totter Hopper"'s effect combo, Yūya successfully defeated Tokumatsu.[82]
Great Entertainment Duel Tournament

A few days after the Duel against Tokumatsu, Shinji suggested for Yūya to join Great Entertainment Duel Tournament that will be held in Facility by Tokumatsu to liven up the Facility, to which Yūya agreed. However, Yūya then was bothered by the sudden change in Crow's attitude towards him and then met Damon, a common who was recently captured and mistook him as Yūgo, informing him how Yuzu and Yūgo attempted to warn people about the invasion of Fusion Dimension. This worried Yūya as the Securities are targeting her. Yūya's insecurities increased upon finding out that Crow and Shinji were planning on jailbreak by taking advantage of the upcoming Duel. Worried about Yuzu's safety, Yūya tried to ask Crow to let him join in their escape plan, but Crow angrily told him that they are not friends nor comrades any more and he should take care of his own friends.

During the Duel, Yūya was lost in thought about Yuzu and what Crow has told him. This made Yūya not concentrating in his Duel until he finally made up his mind to break out so he can find Yuzu. As the Duel went on, Shingo accidentally break through the wall where he found Crow, Shinji, and Damon about to escape through the air ventilation, that caused them to be found out by the prison guards. Yūya apologized to Tokumatsu for his action, telling him how he wants to save Yuzu. Feeling indebted to Yūya, Tokumatsu decided to help Yūya and his friends to get out from the Facility, assisted by other inmates who threw Tokumatsu's rare cards to draw the guards' attentions while Yūya and the others head out through the air ventilation.[83]
Prison Break
Yūya landed safely on "Entermate Trampolynx".
Yūya, Shingo, and Tokumatsu successfully head out, but were ambushed by three Security Arrest Corps with their Goyo monsters. Shingo challenged three of them at once, resulting in failure. Yūya suggested for them to head to the rooftop and then jumped, much to Shingo's chagrin until Tokumatsu forced him. Yūya activated his Duel Disk as he jumped and summoned "Entermate Trampolynx" so they can land safely. Unfortunately, they were quickly driven into corner until Gongenzaka and Shun arrived to save them. Shun defeated the Arrest Corps in instant with "Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon" monster effect. Dennis, who has been watching, informed them that he had freed Serena and she already regrouped with Crow ahead of them.
Yūya and the others fallen into the Security's trap.
At the sewer, Yūya reunited with Crow, Shinji, and their friends. Yūya told Shinji his answer that he won't hesitate anymore for Yuzu's sake, something that Shinji agreed to as well for the sake of his friends. Thinking they were safe, Yūya and the others jumped into the water to swim through their way out, but it turned out to be a trap set by the Security led by Roget who had captured one of Crow's friends. Without any way out, Yūya and the others were once again captured and was about to be taken back, but the Executive Council interrupted Roget, ordering for them to be taken to their place where they will be questioned. In front of the council, Yūya and the others revealed that they came from Standard Dimension and wishes to form alliance with Synchro Dimension against the upcoming invasion by the Academia of Fusion Dimension, but Roger accused them as being the invaders themselves, much to their protest.

Roget insisted for them to be taken into the Security's custody for further interrogation, but Reiji, along with Tsukikage and Reira, revealed themselves, having told the entire story to the council beforehand. To prove their alliance, Reiji told the Lancers to participate in Friendship Cup for recruit potential Duelists to become their allies. Roget begrudgingly agreed under condition that Yūya must participate in the exhibition match against the Duel King, Jack Atlas, that will be hold a day before the championship. Yūya was at first reluctant to participate, but eventually accepted the condition once knowing that Yuzu has signed up for the Friendship Cup.[84]
On the day of exhibition match, while waiting for the match to begin, Yūya was wondering what happened to his friends who were taken away the day before. He then asked the attendant boy, Sam, what kind of person Jack is. Seeing the boy seems hesitant on answering his question, Yūya decided not to question any further as Sam said it's the time for him to be prepared.
Yūya uses all of "Dark Rebellion's" Overlay Units.
When the match started, Yūya got provoked when Jack declared he will defeat Yūya in three turns. Although feeling overwhelmed by Jack's presence, Yūya persisted that he will show them his Entertainment Duel. During his first turn, Yūya performed Pendulum Summon, Fusion Summon, and Xyz Summon at once, summoning "Rune-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon". He used the combination of "Dark Rebellion's" Overlay Unit as well as "Rune Eyes'" monster effect, but Jack able to counter it with Action Card and Trap Card. Jack then told Yūya that his Entertainment Duel is nothing more but for his own satisfaction and he will show him the true Entertainment Duel. Jack immediately turned the table to his favour by performing Synchro Summon, summoning "Red Daemon's Dragon Scarlight", destroying Yūya's monsters with its effect and attacking directly, reducing Yūya's Life Points to 0 and knocking him off of his D-Wheel, winning the duel.[85]
Friendship Cup

The next day, Yūya awoke and found himself in a room and remembered how he lost to Jack. He was then greeted by the Council who assured him that his friends are also staying in the same penthouse as he is. However, only the winner can stay, so the Duelist who lost must leave immediately. Since he lost to Jack, Yūya assumed that they came to tell him to leave, but the Council told him that it was an exhibition match, not the real match so Yūya is still allowed to stay as long as he keeps winning in the real match. The Council then cut down the communication before Yūya could ask about Yuzu. Worried about his friends, Yūya tried to leave the room only to find the door locked.
"Odd-Eyes" and "Dark Rebellion" resonating.
While wondering about his friends, he noticed his "Odd-Eyes" and Yūto's "Dark Rebellion" resonating just like when he met Yūto and Yūgo at the park days before, concluding that Yūgo must be nearby, which also means that Yuzu is near. This prompted Yūya to shout for Yuzu to see whether he could hear her or not. As he stated that he will end the dimensional war and bring smile to everyone across dimensions, Yūya was reminded by Jack's words of how his Entertainment Duel is nothing but for self-satisfaction, making him wondering can he bring smile to people the way he is now.
Yūya received "Tuning Magician" from Sam.
Yūya began to doubt his own ability, but then his thoughts were interrupted by a card slipped into his room. Picking the "Tuning Magician", Yūya asked who is there, and the one replying turned out to be the attendant boy, Sam. Sam asked Yūya to return that card to Jack when he beat him. Sam revealed that Jack gave him that card because he said it suit him, which Sam thinks as Jack belittling him for being a Commons. This made Sam now thinks that Jack is a traitor who has sold his soul to the Tops. He begged Yūya to defeat him in his place because Yūya understood how he felt after losing to Jack. Yūya wanted to respond to Sam's wish, but still doubting how he will win against Jack the way he is now.[86]
Gongenzaka vs. Crow

Yūya later watched the first Duel of the tournament between Gongenzaka and Crow. He was surprised when Gongenzaka became the first person to pull off a Pendulum-Synchro Summon, and while he was disappointed to see Gongenzaka lose to Crow, he was encouraged to see that the crowd were cheering in unison, as opposed to being up in arms over their differing opinions of Jack.[87] He wondered in horror if Gongenzaka would be returned to the Facility, and when the door began to open, he panicked, wondering if it was his turn to Duel next, since he hadn't found a way to Duel without self-satisfaction yet.Fortunately, it was simply Tokumatsu that had came to visit, having bribed his way out of his room with a rare card. Tokumatsu explained that he'd heard a rumor that the losers in the Friendship Cup would be sent to the underground garbage dump to do forced labour, where captured escapees were also sent and from where no-one had returned. Yūya was horrified by the existence of such a place and worried about Gongenzaka.
Shinji vs. Tsukikage

He then learned from the announcements that Reira would be Dueling Shinji next, and he disapproved of Reira Riding Dueling and even being in the tournament. Reira suddenly burst into the room and tightly hugged Yūya, refusing to Duel against Shinji. Reiji entered and Yūya furiously asked him why he was making Reira fight, and why he'd forced Reira to come with them. Reiji admitted that he'd told Reira to accompany them, as he needed to gain experience and was necessary in the fight against the Academia. Yūya told Reiji to shut up, and stated that Reira had been terrified and lonely since they'd arrived in the Synchro Dimension, trying to find Reiji. Yūya vowed not to let Reira fight, and to protect him himself if Reiji wouldn't. Reiji then asked Reira why he wouldn't Duel, and Reira explained that Shinji had been kind to him. Reiji realized that Reira didn't want to Duel a friend and ordered Tsukikage to Duel instead.
He left, and Reira panicked and ran after him. Reiji explained that he was pleased, not angry, since this meant that Reira's sense of self was growing. Yūya was confused by the term, and he tried to get Reira to stay with him, knowing that Reiji would make him fight in the future, but Chojiro told him to let Reira be, since forcing Reira to stay with Yūya would be contradictory to his original statement of Reiji not forcing him, and since Reira probably liked Reiji more than Yūya. At Sam's request, Yūya returned to his room, but remembering how afraid Reira was, Yūya turned around to confront them again but the door was already locked.[88]
Yuzu vs. Chojiro
Yūya cried happily as he realized Yuzu and Tokumatsu's message.
The next match was Yuzu against Chojiro, shocking Yūya who immediately concerned of both for Yuzu and Tokumatsu's well-being. As the Duel went on, Yūya was torn between Yuzu and Tokumatsu, not wanting either of them to lose and being sent to the underground roadwork. However, as both Yuzu and Tokumatsu showed their Entertainment Duelling throughout the match, Yūya realised what they were were trying to convey to him, causing him to break into tears as he once more found his motivation to duel with the way he believes.[89]
While watching Serena's Duel, Yūya became worried for Serena if she lost. He then shouted towards the council that their way is wrong. He was relieved when Serena won the Duel. Throughout the night, Yūya spent his times thinking of his belief and as it reached morning, Yūya determined to show everyone his Entertainment Duel in the next match.[90]
Yūya revealed to everyone that those who lost in Friendship Cup will be sent to underground garbage.
Before the start of the Duel, Yūya revealed to everyone that those who lost in Friendship Cup will be sent to underground force labor, but to his surprise, none of the audiences cares about it and instead were cheering at the news with Melissa simply told him that he just need to win to avoid being sent there. Starting the Duel, Yūya tried his best to show his Entertainment Duel as he has stated before that Duel is for the sake to bring happiness. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, the audience were only entertained whenever either him or Duel Chaser 227 are Duelling in rough way. Yūya quickly got cornered when Duel Chaser 227 summoned his Fusion Monster, "Goyo Emperor", taking over Yūya's monsters.
Yūya got horrified of his victory.
Yūya finally reached his limit when he heard the audience cheering at Duel Chaser 227's declaration to crush him, realising how worse the bloodlust from the audience. In pinch, Yūya immediately turned the tide by summoning "Odd-Eyes Saber Dragon" and relentlessly attacked Duel Chaser 227, defeating him. At the end of the Duel, Yūya regained his senses when Melissa and the audience congratulated and cheered him for winning the Duel, making him horrified once he realised what he has done and then tried to reach the injured Duel Chaser 227 who was taken away in stretch in attempt to stop him from being sent to the underground force labor but he was stopped.[91]
Yūgo vs. Shingo
Yūya started to synchronise his mind with Yūgo through "Odd-Eyes".
Failing to stop the Duel Chaser 227 from being taken away, Yūya was escorted back to his room, depressed over his inability to stop the Duel Chaser 227 from being taken away and unable to show the audience the Duel that he believes. He was so depressed that he didn't pay much attention to the next Duel, which is Shingo against Yūgo. While mulling over his failure, Yūya's "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" suddenly shined just as Yūgo summoned "Clear Wing Synchro Dragon". Yūya's mind became connected to Yūgo, making Yūya's Dueling style indirectly influenced Yūgo's, allowing Yūgo to win the Duel against Shingo. At the end of the Duel, Yūya was unable to remember what he was doing and then watched in dismay as Shingo being taken away by the guards after his loss.[92]
As Yūya watched the Duel between Damon against Sergey with the former seemed to be in the upper hand, Yūya was distressed upon seeing the audience cheering for Damon to crush Sergey, stating that getting excited over a Duel that hurt someone and send him to underground is wrong, but was aware that he himself had done the same thing. At the end of the Duel, Yūya was horrified when Damon lost and heavily injured by Sergey. His thought was interrupted by Tsukikage, who revealed that he purposely lost so he can gain information in the underground under Reiji's order. This angered Yūya who stated that both him and Reiji never cared about their own comrades. However, Tsukikage corrected this, revealing that if Reiji was a kind of person who would abandon his comrades he would have left him long ago.
Yūya wrote a message for Yuzu.
He then delivered Reira's message for Yūya: telling him to win for his own sake and prove the Lancers' worth to the people of Synchro Dimension so they can save their world by defeating Jack. Shocked by the message, Yūya wondered how he can defeat Jack while he himself doesn't know how. Tsukikage told him what Jack had said to Reira: if he want to accomplish something, he must not falter. Finally realizing what Jack meant by his Dueling is conceited, Yūya regained his determination to win. Before Tsukikage left, he asked him to deliver a letter for Yuzu. In the letter, he told Yuzu that he finally understood that in order to be able to convey and make people listen to his belief, he must make himself known in the Synchro Dimension by defeating Jack since he was still a nobody in this world. Once they end the interdimensional war, they will go back to their hometown just as he promised to Shūzō, Tatsuya, Ayu, Futoshi and his mother.[93]
Shun vs. Dennis
In the last Duel of the second day first round, Yūya was worried upon hearing Dennis will Duel against Shun, both members of Lancers, wondering why would they be set up to Duel against each other. As the Duel went on, Yūya noticed that the Duel started to become similar like the previous Duel between Shun and Sora in Maiami Championship and got confused what Shun meant by revealing Dennis' "true identity". He was shocked when Dennis summoned "Antique Gear" monsters, recognizing it as the monsters used by the Obelisk Force of Academia, revealing that Dennis was an Academia Duelist.[94]

Yūya at first refused to believe that Dennis was from Academia, but then realised it was the truth once he felt Yūto's anger reacting to the revelation from inside him. As Yūto's anger spilled into Yūya, Yūto asked him does he understood his feeling, which Yūya answered that he understood, but disapproved to Duel while filled with only hatred and anger. Yūya shouted to Shun to stop using "Satellite Cannon Falcon's" effect on "Chaos Giant" as it was already enough to defeat Dennis. Unfortunately, Shun continued and brutally defeated Dennis. After the Duel, Yūya pondered on despite harbouring so much hatred and rage, Yūto told him to make people smile with Dueling. Yūya then told him that he will carry out his wish and end the dimensional war with his Dueling.[95]
Yuzu vs. Sergey
Throughout Yuzu's Duel against Sergey, he enthusiastically cheered Yuzu, but soon realised that Sergey was planning something. This proven to be true when Sergey performed Fusion Summon and brutally sent Yuzu crashing into one of the buildings, much to Yūya's horror.[96]
Duel Against Shinji

To make things worse for Yūya who was worried about Yuzu, he was immediately called to Duel Shinji in the next match. When Sam opened the door, Yūya frantically asked him what happened to Yuzu, but Sam didn't know. Shinji then arrived and told Yūya that it was pointless to ask Sam and there's nothing they could do to help Yuzu as that is the way of the current Tops-dominated society. Hearing of Shinji's plan to rise a revolt against the Tops, Yūya argued that it was not the time for them to Duel since Yuzu might be suffering waiting for help while they were Duelling. Unfortunately, Shinji persisted in his decision and stated that if Yūya want to say something, he must defeat him first.
Yūya summoned "Soldier Tiger" and "Silver Claw".
Despite knowing that he needed to win for Yuzu's sake, Yūya was unable to concentrate out of concern for Yuzu's well-being, leaving him at the mercy of Shinji's relentless attack. Yūya nearly resigned to the incoming attack until Sora called him out and showed him Yuzu's helmet, indicating that she is safe. Trusting Sora's message, Yūya grabbed an Action Card to nullify the damage and began his counterattack with his "Timesword Magician" and "Silver Claw".[97] When
Believing that every card has its own purpose regardless of its level, he summoned "Tuning Magician" at the cost of decreasing his own LP. Yūya was quickly once again at disadvantage when Shinji destroyed all of his monsters, but he once again survived by using an Action Card. Yūya drew "Resurrection of the Dead" and contemplated which monster he should revive. Having a vision of a new monster through "Tuning Magician's" call, Yūya Pendulum Summoned "Silver Claw" and "Timesword Magician" and revived "Tuning Magician" to perform Synchro Summon, summoning "Enlightenment Paladin" and use its monster effects to defeat Shinji. [98]
Reunion with Sora
Yūya's victory over Shinji earned him a scorn from the Commons. To make things worse, Roget came and praised Yūya for his victory that also followed by the Tops. The praise misled Shinji, Crow, and the other Commons to believe that Yūya is a traitor despite Yūya's firm denial.

Remembering Sora, Yūya escaped from the Duel Palace to look for him. At the Commons area, Sora dragged him into an alley and hide from the Security that Roger had sent. Hearing of Yuzu's safety, Yūya thanked Sora for his help but then turned serious when Sora reminded him that his loyalty to Professor's goal hasn't changed, thinking that Sora came to capture both Yuzu and Serena. Sora quickly denied his accusation and revealed that he came to Synchro Dimension to save Yuzu because he truly thinks of both him and Yuzu as his friends and explained his own way to save her. Sora asked Yūya to tell him where Serena was because he was ordered to bring her back, but Yūya refused to tell him because that would be the same as imprisoning her and even if he escaped back to Standard Dimension along with Yuzu, the Academia will invade eventually, telling Sora that there must be another way.

Unbeknownst to them, the passing Security from before has set a wiretaps that allowed Roget to listen to their conversation and located their whereabouts. Noticing the Security on the roof across the building where they were with restraining tool prepared, Yūya pushed Sora away from being caught and told him to go and protect Yuzu. As Sora reluctantly escaped, Yūya was captured and then taken by the Security to Roger's place at Public Security Maintenance Bureau.[99]
Shun vs. Crow

Face to face with Roget, Yūya angrily questioned him, but Roget insisted that he did so because he was worried about him. As the Duel between Shun and Crow started, Roget showed Reiji, Reira, and the Council whom he held captive and told Yūya that he supported Yūya's belief to make people smile through Duel and proposed an alliance together. Yūya remained distrustful and stated that he believed in Sora to keep Yuzu safe. Roget revealed that he was also a member of Academia that was sent to spy on Synchro Dimension, but admitted that spending times with the residence of the dimension changed him so he wished to protect the dimension from the Academia instead.
Yūya got thrown into solitary confinement.
Roget tried to convince Yūya that Sora would eventually betray him by the fact that he was from Academia like himself, causing Yūya to momentarily doubt his decision.[100] However, seeing the friendship that grew between Crow and Shun and hearing Roget ordered for Yuzu to be captured convinced Yūya to continue trusting his friends, refusing Roget's offer. His refusal led him to be thrown into a solitary prison until his next Duel.[101] Lamenting over his inability to do anything, he remembered Sora whom he entrusted with Yuzu's safety and reaffirmed his belief in him.[102]
Yūgo vs. Serena

While Yūya tried to open the door to no avail, his "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" started to shine and when Yūya realised it, he saw "Clear Wing Synchro Dragon" and Serena, surprising him. However, his mind soon synchronized with Yūgo and both declared that the fun has just begun.[103] The synchronization allowed Yūgo to Synchro summoned a new monster, "Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon" and defeated Serena.[104] Once the synchronization was over, Yūya was wondering whether he was dreaming about the Duel, but then seeing "Odd-Eyes" in his hand made him realised that his mind has linked with Yūgo. This made him worried because if Yūgo won, that means Serena was sent to the underground. He pondered that the phenomenon that had happened to him and people who looked like him were connected to their Dragons. Before Yūya could think any further, he was called for his next match.[105]
Yūya vs. Crow

Before the Duel, Crow apologized to Yūya for misunderstanding him and the Lancers. Knowing he could trust Crow, Yūya revealed that he wished to show the Duel he believes and change the City by defeating Jack, but now he couldn't because Roget has took Reiji, Reira, and the Council as hostage so he can control the City. Both vowed to help each other to save their friends and started the Duel. Yūya and Crow started the first three turns with entertainment style Duel that entertained the audiences as Crow made a path for Yūya to reach the Council building to save Reiji and Reira, but this plan was ruined when Roget activated the mind-controlling chip that he placed in Yūya's helmet. The control chip forcefully synchronized Yūya with his dimension counterparts and changed him vicious, mercilessly attacking Crow with "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and then summoned "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon".[106]
He then proceeded to summon "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon", causing most of the electricity around them to lose its power. This resulted with the course change stopping midway before the courses could connect, putting both Yūya and Crow in danger. While Crow able to avoid falling using the wings of his D-Wheel, Yūya manage to survive by activating Equip Magic Card "Wings of the Supreme King" on "Odd-Eyes Rebellion", allowing it to fly and landed Yūya safely on the course. Realizing something was wrong, Crow questioned Yūya's plan, but Yūya only glared at him and continued his assault.
Yūya fell unconscious after the Duel.
Noticing Obelisk Force's arrival, Sora jumped onto Crow's D-Wheel and asked for his help to save Yūya. Agreeing to fulfill his request, Crow summoned "Assault Black Feather - Chidori the Light Rain" to destroy "Odd-Eyes Rebellion" and short out the device in Yūya's helmet. However, The Equip Magic inflicted finishing blow on Crow, defeating him. Yūya, freed from the mind control, fell unconscious on his D-Wheel. When he regained his consciousness, he saw Crow being dragged by the guards, questioning what he had done to him. Crow delivered Sora's message to save Serena, leaving Yūya reluctantly left Crow and set off to protect Serena.[107]
Reira vs. Obelisk Force

Yūya quickly realized that the Obelisk Force had indeed arrived in the Synchro Dimension, and he drove down the streets looking for Sora and Serena. When he saw a signal flare, he realized that it might mark the location of Serena as signaled by the Obelisk Force. He arrived on his D-Wheel just in time to rescue Reira and Serena from three of the Obelisk Force.[108] He then proceeded to defeat the three Obelisk Force with "Enlightenment Paladin", "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon", and "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon".

Seeing Reira was still disillusioned from the constant Duels, Yūya hugged him until he calms down. Once Reira calmed down, Yūya asked why he was with Serena, and the latter explained that Reira has been protecting her from the Obelisk Force all by himself, an action that both she and Yūya praised him for. However, their relief was short lived when Barrett arrived with another group of three Obelisk Force.
Barrett asked Yūya of Yuzu's whereabouts, promising to spare his life in exchange, but Yūya immediately refused, declaring he will protect both Yuzu and Serena. The Duel was briefly interrupted by Sora's arrival who knocked out three Obelisk Forces when they were about to get Serena, followed by Yūri's arrival with another three Obelisk Forces and then Yūgo who proceeded to Duel with Yūri. Barrett once again demanded Yuzu's location as he inflicted more damage to make Yūya confessed, but Yūya kept refusing to give up. When Yūgo and Yūri summoned their respectivedragons to their fields, Yūya started to synchronize again with them and entered the state of rage.[110]

Their synchronization led a dimensional hole appeared in the sky as they stated they have been waiting for this moment where they will become one and slowly try to reach towards the dimensional hole. However, Yuzu's arrival transported both Yūgo and Yūri away from the place and ended the synchronization. Regaining his senses, Yūya questioned Yuzu's presence and prepared to protect her when Barrett approached despite on the verge of defeat, much to Yuzu's protest. She relented, however, when Yūya told her that he vowed to himself that he won't let Academia take her or Serena. Commending Yūya's resolve to protect his friends, Barrett respected Yūya as a warrior and agreed to continue the Duel.
Duel Against Sergey

Before their Duel could reach to its conclusion, Sergey joined the Duel and defeated Barrett, but not before the latter brought back Serena with him to Academia. Freed from his bind, this time, Yūya determined to protect Yuzu from Sergey, furthered by the fact Sergey nearly killed Yuzu in their previous Duel. Noticing Yūya's anger, Yuzu told him that he looked like a different person and she didn't want to see him like that again. Hearing this, Yūya looked at the "Smile World" and remembered his parents and convinced he couldn't bring smile to the people the way he is now and it wasn't the right time to do so, but determined to protect Yuzu at all cost. Yūya summoned "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon" and destroyed one of Sergey's monsters, but Sergey countered back by activating the monster effect to destroy "Odd-Eyes Rebellion" and direct attacked Yūya, defeating him. Injured from the impact, Yūya could only watched helplessly as Sergey took Yuzu with him.[111]
Jack vs. Sergey

The next day, Yūya reunited with Gongenzaka, Shingo, and Tokumatsu. Seeing Yūya's worn out condition, Shingo assumed it was Sora's doing, but Yūya told him that he is not their enemy. After explaining the situation, Sora and Tsukikage decided to rescue Yuzu. Yūya also wanted to go, but they told him to stay because he won't be able to do anything in his current condition. They were then interrupted by the announcement of the next match despite the riot, surprising them. They were furthered surprised when it was announced that Yūgo was disqualified so the next match would be Jack against Sergey. Refusing to stay still, Yūya insisted that he will also go to rescue Yuzu. Seeing it was meaningless to persuade Yūya, Gongenzaka volunteered to go with him. Reira begged Yūya not to leave him, but Yūya told him to stay with Tokumatsu and Shingo, much to the latter's objection. Yūya asked Shingo to protect Reira and was able to convince him with Tokumatsu's help.[112]
Friendship Cup Final Match

After Sergey's defeat,[113] Yūya and Gongenzaka were shocked by Roget's declaration of martial law, causing further discord between Commons and Security. He was interrupted by Yuzu who revealed Roger's real intent and begged Yūya to show the Entertainment Duel that they believed in before Roget cut off the communication. Fearing for Yuzu's safety, Yūya intended to save her, but Gongenzaka told him to trust Sora and Tsukikage. Yūya struggled with his feelings after hearing Yuzu's desperate wish until Sam arrived and delivered Jack's message for him: demonstrate the Duel he believes in their Duel. Finally realising Jack's belief, Yūya regained his spirit and headed for Duel Palace where Jack was waiting.

This was difficult because the riot has blocked most of the road. Frank, Amanda, and Tanner who safely evaded the riot showed him another way to the Duel Palace. Just as they were about to reach the Duel Palace, the entrance was blocked by another group of rioting Commons. Yūya and Gongenzaka tried to calm them down, but their attempts only caused the Commons to view them as enemies. Fortunately, Shun, Reiji, Reira, Shingo, and Tokumatsu arrived, riding on Shun's Raid Raptors monsters that allowed Yūya to enter Duel Palace midair. Yūya asked Shun how they knew he was there, to which Shun answered that Reiji was the one who figured it out. Arriving in Duel Palace, Yūya declared to everyone that he believes Duel is not tool for conflict, but is meant to be used to make people happy and he will show it in his rematch against Jack.[114]
Yūya activated "Smile World".
Before the Duel started, Yūya declared to Jack that he will defeat him not only for himself, but also for the sake of his comrades who believes in him. As the Duel started, Jack got the first turn and Synchro Summoned "Red Wyvern". In Yūya's turn, he began his Entertainment Duel style, summoning "Timesword Magician" and "Entermate Radish Horse" and then increased their ATKs using "Smile World". Like in his previous Duel against Jack, he attempted another One-Turn-Kill, but Jack was able to negate his battle phase and Synchro summoned "Red Daemon's Dragon Scarlight". Jack then expressed his disappointment in Yūya's Entertainment Duel, telling him to use his own Dueling. Yūya insisted that the Entertainment Dueling that he inherited from his father was his Dueling, but Jack pointed out that Yūya has been following his father's shadow, resulting his Dueling was nothing more but an imitation of his father. This frustrated Jack who had expecting their Duel and told Yūya that he must use his own words instead of borrowing it from his father.

They were interrupted by Duel Chasers who started to attack Yūya. Yūya was able to avoid the first attack using Action Card, but was at loss on how to avoid the second attack. Before the attack could connect, Jack activated "Scarlight's" monster effect to destroy all the monsters that Duel Chasers and Yūya were controlling in one swoop, leaving Yūya to face the incoming attack.[115] Fortunately, Yūya was able to escape the damage by using an Action Card and refused to surrender since it would mean rejecting his father's Dueling. Yūya proceeded with his turn by summoning "Enlightenment Paladin" and direct attack "Scarlight", but Jack's trap card prevented its destruction, ending his turn.
Yūya summoned "Nirvana High Paladin".
As Yūya's LP was reduced to 100, he lamented over the fact that even his Synchro Summon was also "borrowed" from someone else instead of his own. Only until Jack commented that it'll be good if Yūya was able to use the Pendulum method as his breakthrough that Yūya remembered that he was the first person who ever performed Pendulum Summon and didn't borrow it from anyone. Finally finding his own words, Yūya for the first time summoned a Synchro Pendulum monster, "Nirvana High Paladin" by releasing "Enlightenment Paladin" and "Entermate Cheermole", surprising everyone for performing Synchro Summon without a Tuner.

Finally getting excited, Jack responded to Yūya by performing a Double Tuning, Synchro summoning "Red Daemon's Dragon Tyrant". Facing Jack's onslaught, Yūya fiercely defended himself by using the effects of his Pendulum monsters, avoiding further damage on his LP. Jack then commented that Yūya has finally able to convey his own will, something that Yūya confirmed in his mind that everything he has learned until now was all thanks to his family, friends, and every person he has Dueled regardless of winning or losing as those Duels has nurtured him until now and that wasn't something that he could accomplish alone. Now convinced of his own Dueling that wasn't borrowed nor conceited, Yūya performed a full Pendulum Summon, summoning "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon", "Timesword Magician", "Entermate Radish Horse", "Entermate Gumgumouton", and "Entermate Bubbulldog ", all five of them at once, surprising Jack and the entire audience with Yūya declared that he was fighting together with everyone else.[116]
Yūya began the climax of his Entertainment Dueling.
Yūya once again activated "Smile World" to increase his monsters' ATK and then "Radish Horse's" effect to reduced Jack's "Red Dae mon's". However, Jack countered it with his Trap Card and increased its ATK to 10.000. Yūya determined to speak his own words with pride and fight as the pioneer of Pendulum Summon. Yūya used "Nirvana High Paladin's" Pendulum effect to prevent his monsters' destruction and reduced "Red Daemon's" ATK by each of his monsters' battle phase. Yūya's feeling finally reached the hearts of the people of the City who were impressed by his Duel, leading to Crow, Shinji, Securities, and some residents of the City to join them in Duel Lane regardless of the martial law, all giving their support to Yūya. The support that he received encouraged Yūya to finish the Duel in his Entertainment Dueling style, defeating Jack by delivering the finishing blow with "Odd-Eyes".
Yūya apologized to Jack for calling him King.
After the Duel, Yūya thanked Jack for the Duel, referring him as "King". To his surprise, Jack shouted back that he was no longer the King, something that Yūya apologized for. As he gave the title of Duel King to Yūya, Jack reconfirmed that this was the true extent of Yūya's belief as well as the strength of "Smile World". Yūya corrected Jack, explaining that he could brought so much happiness to the people of City only because he Dueled against him. Jack then proudly announced to everyone in the City that being able to Duel Yūya was a very great honor to him as Yūya was the Duelist who could speak with him through Duel he had been waiting for. The Executive Council then interrupted and announced that after watching the result of the final match, they decided to abolish the Commons and Tops status system and dissolved the council, allowing the residents of City to live as equal, much to everyone's joy.
Reiji vs. Roget

Unfortunately, their celebration didn't last long when Sora told Yūya and the Lancers through the Public Security broadcast room that despite they were able to free Yuzu from her confinement, both he and Tsukikage were defeated by Roget who has recaptured Yuzu with intent to bring her to Academia as bargaining chip. Yūya quickly rode into the helicopter delivered by the Council, resolving to save Yuzu.[117] Arriving at the building together with Crow and Jack who also followed, Yūya regrouped with Reira and Tsukikage who were trying to enter the room where Reiji and Roget were trapped.
Yūya helped the injured Sora.
They were able to get in when Sora used the hacking program from his duel disk to break in. Inside, Reiji motioned them to stay back until he revealed that the Roget he was dueling against was nothing but a hologram projection that Roget controlled while the real Roget was watching from another room with Yuzu. Roger tried to dissuade the Lancers from following Reiji by revealing his connection with the Professor, but Yūya chose to trust Reiji and demanded Roget to return Yuzu.

Roget tried to escape with Yuzu, but Jack and Crow intercepted him on his way by destroying the elevator. As Yuzu fell from the elevator, Yūya caught her with the help of "Whip Viper" and "Discover Hippo". The two then tearfully shared a moment, both happy with their reunion. Roget, who turned out have survived the fall, activated the interdimensional travel device in attempt to destroy the City together with him by sending it into the void of dimensions, but it malfunctioned and Roget was sucked into a dimensional portal instead and the device stopped working.
Yūya got sucked into the wormhole.
Shortly afterwards, Yuzu regained consciousness and asked what happened to Roget, to which Yūya replied that while he didn't know of Roget's fate after being sucked by a wormhole, he was glad that she was here with him, not taken by anyone, a feeling shared by Yuzu. Yūya told Yuzu that they will go back together, but at that moment, the interdimensional travel device malfunctioned once more, creating a wormhole that sucked Yuzu as Yūya watched in dismay before he got sucked into the portal himself. Gongenzaka caught him with Shun, and Shingo also trying to help, but this wasn't enough and the four of them were sucked into the wormhole.
Xyz Dimensions Arc
Arrival

When Yūya came to, he found himself at Heartland together with Shun, Gongenzaka, and Shingo.[118] While Shun going to look for other members of Resistance, Yūya, Shingo, and Gongenzaka going to look for Yuzu. Seeing how hungry Shingo was, they gathered some foods they could find and encountered some refugees, a woman with her two sons who mistook them as Academia Duelists. Yūya and the others offered the foods they have gathered to prove they mean no harm. Yūya asked the woman has she ever saw Yuzu, but she didn't and explained that there has been no sight of the Resistance and concluded they have been wiped out, including her husband, and she blamed everything that happened on Dueling. Yūya tried to voice his objection, but decided not to as he is aware of the fact he doesn't understand what she had been through.
Meeting Kaito
Yūya, Gongenzaka, and Shingo defeated the three Academia students.
Three Academia Duelists then arrived, leading Yūya and the others to Duel them, introducing themselves as Lancers who came from Standard Dimension to stop their plan. They easily defeated the three Academia Duelists with their Entertainment Duel. Shingo attempted to turn them into cards by using their duel disks, but Yūya stopped him since they have already lost and emphasized that Dueling is not a tool to harm people, much to Shingo's objection. The three Academia Duelists then tried to flee, but were attacked by someone on their attempt. When Yūya and the others reached them, they were already turned into cards by a Resistance Duelist, Kaito Tenjō, who mistook them as another Academia Duelists.[119]
Shingo & Gongenzaka vs. Kaito

Recognizing Kaito as a Resistance Duelist, Yūya and Gongenzaka tried to explain that they are not from Academia and much less an enemy, but Kaito rebuffed their defense, stating he will determine whether they are enemies or not through Duel. This offended Shingo who accepted the Duel, prompting Gongenzaka to join as well to stop them. Unfortunately, neither Shingo nor Kaito will listen to what he said and persisted to continue the Duel. Shingo sealed Kaito's way of Xyz Summon Level 4 monsters, but Yūya stated that it won't be enough to defeat Kaito. Yūya was surprised that he knew Kaito's name before he realised that Yūto was the one who told him, something that Yūto confirmed.

Yūto explained of Kaito's background as a famous Duelist in Heartland who was expected to be the Champion of the city before the invasion, but the current Kaito's Dueling was different from back then that was warmer while now his Duelling there was only anger. Shingo tried to counter Kaito's strategy by banishing his dragon from the extra deck, but Kaito countered it with his continuous Trap Card that will inflict damage only to Shingo and Gongnenzaka. Yūya wondered if this was Kaito's Dueling, but Yūto revealed that the old Kaito won't think of such ruthless strategy.
Yūya determined to reach out to Kaito through Duel.
In the end, despite Shingo and Gongenzaka's best effort, Kaito easily overwhelmed them by Xyz summoned his ace monster, "Galaxy-Eyes Cipher Dragon". Yūya tried to help Shingo and Gongenzaka, but Kaito interrupted, deciding to card him along with them as well. Not wanting to see anyone being carded again, Yūya accepted Kaito's challenge. Yūto tried to persuade Yūya to change his mind because talking to the current Kaito won't help, but Yūya replied that if talking won't help then he will convey his ideal and feelings through Duel like he did with Jack, positive that it will reach Kaito.[120]
Duel Against Kaito
Yūya reminded Yūto of his wish.
Yūya told Kaito that he simply wanted to talk to him through Duel, but Kaito refused. Yūto explained that while he was able to connect with Jack through Duel, that was only possible because both he and Jack shared the same goal to bring peace to the City. Despite this, Yūya remained determined that he could, asking Yūto to trust him as he reminded Yūto himself and other people of Xyz Dimension, including Kaito, wants to bring smile. Yūya started his turn by Pendulum summoned "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and used "Entermate Drumming Kong's" effect to increased its ATK enough to overpower "Galaxy-Eyes", but Kaito was able to counter its attack. To lessen the damage that he will receive, Yūya reached and activated an Action Card, "Miracle".

Still determined to connect with Kaito, Yūya Xyz summoned "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon" to attack, increasing its ATK to 6000 using "Dragoncaller Magician's" effect. Unfortunately, Kaito once again able to counter the attack with his reverse card and destroy "Odd-Eyes Rebellion" by summoning another "Galaxy-Eyes". Cornered, Yūto told Yūya to quickly use the Supreme King Black Dragon's effect. Trusting Yūto's judgement, Yūya did as he was told, summoning "Entermate Le-Bellman" into Pendulum zone and then summoned "Timesword Magician" and "Entermate Whim Witch". At this time, Yūya admitted that Yūto was right that he was successful in City because Jack was his opponent and he knew that he couldn't bring smile to everyone by his strength alone. Furthermore, even though he wanted to calm Kaito's rage, his heart is still closed off.
Yūya and Yūto summoned "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" together.
Also wanting to open up Kaito's heart, Yūto helped Yūya to came up with their next tactic. Now Dueling together with Yūto, Yūya used "Le Bellman's" Pendulum effect to increase "Timesword's" and "Wim Witch's" level to 4, Xyz summoning "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon", shocking Kaito. Before the Duel could continue, however, Shun, along with Allen Kozuki and Sayaka Sasayama, interrupted the Duel and cleared the confusion. Despite Shun's assurance that Yūya and the others are allies, Kaito remained defiant and left the place, leaving Yūya and Yūto to wonder about him.[121]
The Resistance Hideout
Yūya and Yūto relieved to hear Shun's trust towards Yūya.
Yūya and the others were escorted to the Resistancehideout where the Resistance members and several refugees were gathering. While explaining the situation, Allen pointed out the resemblance between Yūya and Yūto, wondering if he really wasn't Yūto. Yūya denied this and was about to reveal about what happened to Yūto, but Yūto told him not to because they won't understand. He was saved from answering the question by Shun who explained that while he didn't know where Yūto had gone to, he now trusted Yūya whom Yūto had entrusted with his ace monster, much to Yūya and Yūto's relief.

Sayaka explained that while Shun and Yūto were gone, Academia had launched massive offensive attacks that nearly wiped out both Spade and Clover branches Resistance Duelists, including Kaito's family. Yūya lamented over his inability to understand Kaito's sadness, realizing that he was forcing to open his heart instead of trying to understand him. Sayaka then remembered Yūya's full name and asked does he has any connection with Yūshō. Yūya revealed that Yūshō is his father and Allen explained that Yūshō was their teacher before the invasion. Yūya was initially happy to hear about his father until Allen called him a coward for disappearing when they were invaded, shocking Yūya.[122]
Duel Against Edo Phoenix

Refusing to believe Allen's claim that Yūshō had abandoned them, Yūya tried to look for Yūshō and clear his name. While looking for his father, Yūya questioned Yūto had he ever met his father, remembering Yūto's words to him from before was similar to that of his father's belief, but Yūto denied and revealed that he heard those words from Ruri who most likely heard it from Sayaka who was Yūshō's student. Yūya then changed the subject to the fact they were able to freely communicate with each other compared to previous instances was because they were at Xyz Dimension. Yūto theorized that what happened in the Duel against Barrett when the four dragons resonated was the connected to it, including why he got absorbed into Yūya's body as he felt his current residence in Yūya's body was due to "Dark Rebellion's" will.

They were interrupted by a hooded young man who asked Yūya what he was doing, to which Yūya answered that he was looking for his father. Assuming he got lost, the man demanded Yūya for his father's name, claiming he may able to help him find his father. Yūya asked back who he is, but the man firmly told him to quickly answer his question. When Yūya told him of his father and noticed the man's reaction, he at first assumed the man was one of people who hates Yūshō for his apparent cowardice, but then the man revealed himself as an Academia Duelist, Edo Phoenix. Yūya started to question him about his father, but Edo refused to speak and relentlessly attacked Yūya.

Hoping for more information about his father, Yūya determined to communicate with Edo to no avail due to the latter's vendetta against Yūshō that now extended to Yūya who used "Entermate" monsters and "Smile World". Yūto tried to dissuade Yūya from continuing his effort and instead concentrating on defeating Edo, but Yūya still insisted on trying because he finally get a chance to find some clues about his father's whereabouts and worried he won't get another chance if he missed it now, leading Yūto to pointed out the fact that Edo hates Yūshō means even Yūshō failed to make him smile. This fact unnerved Yūya, giving Yūto the opportunity to take over his body. Yūto reduced Edo's LP to 100 before letting Yūya in control once more, but Edo once again pushed Yūya into corner using his continuous trap card that overpowered Xyz monsters. Yūya barely survived by using an Action Card to negate damage point.

Yūto's anger for Edo and regret for not being able to help his comrades soon overcame him and he once again forcefully took over Yūya's body, ignoring Yūya's plea to stop. Yūto summoned "Dark Requiem Xyz Dragon" to turn the tide and just when Yūto deliver the finishing blow, Edo used his monster effect to deal both of them 1000 damage that led their Duel to end with a draw. The shockwave sent Yūya flying and buried under a rubble. Before losing consciousness under the rubble, Yūya heard several Academia Duelists arrived to help Edo, whom he learned to be a Commander-in-Chief of Academia army.[123]
Shun vs. Kaito

After regaining his consciousness, Yūya went on his way to the hideout, but then noticed there was a Duel nearby the Resistance hideout and went there, thinking it was Academia, only to find Shun Dueling against Kaito. He came between them, questioning their action even thought they are supposed to be comrades. However, Allen told him not to interfere because he is an outsider and neither Kaito nor Shun has any intention to stop, so Yūto told Yūya to leave the matter to Shun.

As he watched the Duel, Yūto started to reminisce his times in Heartland Duel School and unconsciously took over Yūya's body as he talked, catching everyone's attention. No longer able to hide it and felt they have the right to know, Yūya revealed that Yūto was inside him. While everyone else was surprised and bewildered, Shun didn't because he already had a hunch of Yūto's presence. Unfortunately, Shun was still unable to open Kaito's heart and defeated. Yūya asked Kaito to stop when Kaito was about to turn Shun into card, which followed by Sayaka who also begged as she revealed that she had witnessed Ruri's abduction, shocking Yūya and prompting Kaito to leave.[124]
Duel Against Tyler Sisters

Sayaka suddenly left without telling anyone, making everyone panicked. While Allen search for Sayaka alone, the Lancers split into two groups: Yūya with Shun and Gongenzaka with Shingo.[125] While searching for Sayaka, Yūya and Shun heard Shingo's scream and immediately rushed to where the scream came from. They arrived to find Gongenzaka, Shingo, Allen, and Sayaka all beat up by Academia Tag Duelists, Tyler Sisters, Gloria and Grace. Furious at how the sisters injured their friends, Yūya and Shun accepted their Tag Duel challenge.

Finding out the sisters were the ones responsible for annihilating most Duelists from the Spade Branch, the branch where Shun and Yūto came from, Shun and Yūto quickly became emotional and conquered by their anger, which didn't sit well with Yūya as it resulted with Shun making careless moves that only increased the sisters' LPs due to their trap every time they special summoned, and neither he nor Shun could get any Action Card out of fear the shockwave would harm Shingo and Gongenzaka who were behind them. Yūya tried to calm both Shun and Yūto down, but neither were listening.

Fearing they will be taken over by the mysterious being again if either him or Yūto gave in to their anger, Yūya told Shun and Yūto to not let their rage overwhelms them and Duel in their own way instead of being swayed by their emotions, asking both of them to trust him. Determined to Duel with the way he believes in, Yūya began his Entertainment Duel, activating "Miracle Rocket Show" and then summoned "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon". He then activated "Smile World" to increase all of the monsters' ATK and used both "Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon" and "Dark Rebellion's" effect to increased their own ATK, destroying "Amazoness Pet Liger". Yūya then activated "Miracle Rocket Show's" final effect to reduce the sisters' remaining LP, defeating them for good.[126]
Duel Against Obelisk Force

While on their way back, Yūya asked Allen and Sayaka were they all right, to which Allen replied that while he accepted Yūya's Entertainment Dueling, he was still yet to accept him as comrade. Hearing this, Shun urged Allen to stop being stubborn and be honest with himself. Yūya offered a handshake as sign of friendship in response, which Allen and Sayaka accepted. Their moment was interrupted by the Obelisk Force who challenged them to Duel. Yūya told Gongenzaka and Shingo to rest since they were still injured, leaving only himself and Shun to fight. The Obelisk Force directed their attack to Yūya first, but he managed to avoid damage by using an Action Card to forcefully end battle phase. Yūya then countered attack by summoning "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon", "Entermate Silver Claw", and "Entermate Friendonkey". However, Yūya purposely spared the Obelisk Force with enough LP because he didn't want it to end so quickly and wanted to speak with them through Duel, which they commented as naivety.

Things went well until the Obelisk Force Fusion summoned "Antique Gear Chaos Giant", triggering Sayaka's trauma of the first wave invasion that caused her to run away. "Chaos Giant's" footstep caused a debris right above Sayaka to fall, prompting Shun to use himself as a shield to protect her. The impact injured Shun and he passed out, leaving Yūya to fight alone. Yūya barely able to protect himself and the others by negating the battle damage. To avoid the next attack, Yūya tried to reach an Action Card, but "Chaos Giant's" footstep blew the card away before Yūya could reach it. To his and everyone shock, however, Kaito suddenly appeared and grabbed the Action Card, activating its effect to change Yūya's monster into Defense position, thus, not taking any damage. While Kaito deal with the Obelisk Force, Yūya rushed to Shun to help him. After Kaito defeated the Obelisk Force, Edo suddenly appeared with a squad of Academia Duelists, challenging Yūya.[127]
Rematch Against Edo

Yūya intended to carry Shun on his back and take him to their hideout, but Edo then chained his Duel Disk that forcefully activated Action Field as Edo dragged Yūya to him and trapped both of them in his Magic Field so no one can interfere with their Duel. Yūya initially refused to Duel him, but Yūto then told him that Academia won't hesitate to harm those who are injured, unarmed, and even at the verge of death, which means the only way to save Shun is to defeat Edo. Yūya still worried for his friends who were surrounded until Kaito told him that he will take care of the Academia squad.
Yūya accepted Edo's challenge and started his turn by summoning "Odd-Eyes" and "Entermate Dag Daggerman" to destroy Edo's "Destiny HERO - Decisionguy" and direct attack him, but Edo able to avoid the direct damage using his monster's effect and started his turn, attacking and quickly reducing Yūya's LP to 600. Despite the damage he took, Yūya instead, was momentarily worried about Kaito, prompting Yūto to remind him to focus on his own Duel. Yūya's worry was put at ease after Kaito defeated the entire Academia squad all by himself and took Shun to safety with the others. Feeling relieved, Yūya finally allowed himself to fully focus on his Duel against Edo. Wanting to understand Edo despite Yūto's warning, Yūya tried to speak with him by performing Fusion Summon, summoning "Brave-Eyes Pendulum Dragon".

Yūya was seemingly able to destroy Edo's ace monster, "Destiny HERO - Dystopiaguy", by using all three of "Brave-Eyes'" monster effects, but to his shock and dismay, Edo was able to counter by using the combination of his Trap and "Dystopiaguy's" effect to destroy "Brave-Eyes". Yūya then noticed a torn half of "Smile World" belonged to his father fell nearby Edo and angrily asked why he has it, refusing to end his turn until Edo answer his question, and Edo reluctantly did so. Despite the hatred that Edo showed and declaration that he will defeat Yūya to prove Yūshō was wrong, listening to Edo's story caused Yūya to smile at the fact how Edo has been carrying the half of the torn "Smile World" the whole time. With his turn has ended, Yūya was faced against the incoming direct attack from "Dystopiaguy".[128]

He escaped from the finishing blow using the Action Card "Evasion". Realizing that Edo was torn between his father and Leo's teachings, Yūya pointed out this fact to Edo and declared he will make Edo remember the joy he felt when he Dueled his father. Yūya advanced summoned "Entermate Laughmaker" and then used Trap card "Counterattack Entermate" to inflict damage to Edo. As he did so, Yūya expressed his excitement and his desire for both of them able to speak through Dueling, believing it could eliminate conflict. Edo's rage intensified and then revealed what Yūshō had told him during their Duel: Yūshō condemned that Academia's actions are cruel and he will forgive them if they change their way and smile together with him.

Yūya received another damage that reduced his LP 100, but this didn't cease Yūya's determination to communicate with Edo, especially after realizing that he and his father were sharing the same feelings. On the contrary, the story made him to be even more determined to fulfill his goal, continuing to show how much fun Dueling can be to Edo. Yūya began his Entertainment Dueling, Pendulum summoning "Odd-Eyes", "Dag Daggerman", and "Laughmaker" before activating "Entertainment Exchange" to send "Odd-Eyes" and "Dag Daggerman" to Edo's field. He then used the combination of "Smile World" and "Laughmaker's" effect to increase its ATK, but Edo destroyed it by activating "Wire Mesh - Chain Deathmatch's" effect.

To Edo's surprise, Yūya wasn't fazed by his monster's destruction because this was in fact, part of Yūya's plan. Yūya activated another of its effect to revive "Brave-Eyes", knowing that he needed his Fusion monster so he could speak with Edo who also used Fusion Summoning. He then used the combination of "Brave-Eyes" to attack and "Miracle Fire" to overpower "Dystopiaguy's" ATK, finally defeating Edo for good. Unfortunately, his relief didn't last long as the reinforcement that Noro requested has arrived, surrounding him and Edo.[129]
Yūya and Yūto were shocked by Edo's declaration.
To Yūya and everyone's surprise, just as Noro ordered the soldiers to attack, Edo defended Yūya, declaring he was willing to be branded as a traitor if it means he could do what he thinks is the right thing as he now realized from his Duel against Yūya that Yūshō's philosophy is correct. The Tyler Sisters also followed the suit, much to Yūya's relief and gratitude as he revealed Yūto's existence within him to the three former Academia Duelists and their wishes that they will help them returning the happiness to the people of Heartland. Kaito and Allen then returned with several of their Resistance comrades, forcing Noro to surrender, and Edo's speech convinced the remaining soldiers to surrender as well, which made Yūya glad even more.
Fusion Dimension Arc

Back at Resistance hideout with Edo and the other former Academia soldiers who began to help the refugees, Yūya and the others were discussing their decision to let the former Academia, especially Edo, helping them after what they have done. Yūto then momentarily possessed Yūya's body to tell them what they believed: forgiveness could bring the end of conflict and open the path to the future. Edo then revealed there was a way to change back the people who have been carded, but they first need to retrieve the carded people from Academia in Fusion Dimension.

Using the dimension transfer device in Academia base in Heartland, Yūya, Kaito, Gongenzaka, and Shingo decided to go to Fusion Dimension. Before departing, Yūya accepted Edo's apology for accidentally sending his father to another dimension and reaffirmed his trust in Edo, as well as requesting his help to find Yuzu. Allen then arrived and gave Yūya his roller skates as a sign of their friendship, which Yūya happily accepted. He and others then went to Fusion Dimension with Edo, Sayaka, and Allen watching as they were transported.
Rematch Against Isao

At Fusion Dimension, Yūya found and reunited with Yuzu who were escaping with Yūgo from Dennis and his Academia squad, which also consequently caused Yūgo to be transported to somewhere else.[130] Before Yūya could approach Yuzu, he was pinned down by a vengeful Isao who challenged him for a rematch. Yūya initially refused out of concern for Yuzu, but Isao tightened his grip and won't let go until Yūya accept. After being convinced by Yuzu, Yūya accepted Isao's challenge, which worried Yūto but Yūya felt that it was his fault Isao turned out the way. During his turn, Isao told Yūya to summon "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" and Yūya noticed the hatred Isao has from the way he said it, making Yūya to wonder that the cause of Isao's hatred was because last time he defeated him while being possessed by the unknown darkness.

Regardless, Yūya summoned "Dark Rebellion" like Isao has wanted. Isao then Fusion summoned "Shura" at the cost of his own LP each during Standby Phase. "Shura's" effect gave disadvantage to Xyz monster, so Yūya used Pendulum effects to give "Dark Rebellion" level similar as "Shura", barely defending "Dark Rebellion" from destruction. Isao counterattacked by increasing "Shura's" ATK and tried to stop Yūya from getting an Action Card, but Yūya successfully evaded Isao's attack and used the roller skates to move quicker, though he at first has difficulty in balancing himself, but quickly adjusting himself and able to get an Action Card to negate battle damage. Yūto asked whether Yūya did that on purpose, to which Yūya denied.

Unable to forgive himself if he got defeated again, Isao used his trap card to inflict fatal damage to both himself and Yūya, destroying the ground they were standing in the process, but Yūya used his trap card "Acrobat Tower" to save himself and Isao by summoning back all of their monsters on graveyard. He then challenged Isao to a gamble since his trap card required both players to draw two cards from their decks and the one who has the lowest level of the total of monsters in their graveyard won't get any damage while the one with higher level will be inflicted damage based on the level of the monsters. Yūya has the lower level, allowing him to win against Isao. He then offered his hand to help Isao stand while telling him that he had fun Dueling against him. This time, Isao accepted his hand and admitted that his Entertainment Dueling was not bad, making Yūya happy.[131]
Duel Against Captain Solo

Yuzu took Yūya and the others to the harbor where Yūshō was, but arrived too late as the ship sailed off, prompting them to look for another ship or boat. Serena then appeared[132] and led them to a pirate ship led by Captain Solo, telling them she was able to escape not long after being recaptured by Barrett. En route to Academia, however, Academia helicopter arrived and Serena assisted them in capturing Yuzu, taking her to the helicopter, leaving Yūya, Shingo, and Gongenzaka to face Solo and his crew who were in league with Academia. While Shingo and Gongenzaka were tied by Solo's crews, Yūya Dueled Solo whose monster effect prevented Yūya from setting any monster on his field let alone summoning any of his monsters from his hand, forcing him to rely on Action Card to increase ATK. Unfortunately, Solo's dirty play prevented Yūya from getting any Action Card and when he finally got one, the effect was a self-damage.

Yūya found an Action Card above the ship and tried to reach it, knowing that Solo won't be able to stop him. Unfortunately, Solo's crew moved the ship, causing Yūya to slip and fell from the ship. Before he could fell into the sea, he was saved by Crow who came with the remaining Lancers. Crow saved Yūya by summoning "Raikiri" before he fell into the sea, while Tsukikage freed Shingo and Gongenzaka from their bind. Solo directly attacked the boat they were riding with his cannon just as he direct attacked Yūya, but Reiji successfully evaded each of the cannon.

With Yūya's LP reduced to 900, Sora joined the Duel, summoning his Fusion monster from his extra deck that stronger than Solo. When Solo used an Action Card to overpower Sora's monster, Yūya used his trap card to increase Sora's monster's ATK that overpowered Solo's "Captain Lock", defeating Solo. Before leaving, Tsukikage has tampered with a part of Solo's ship, preventing him and his crew from following them. Yūya was relieved once hearing the situation in the City after his disappearance and expressed his belief that Serena captured Yuzu not because of her own will, something that Sora confirmed, revealing that he had heard there is someone who can control people's heart on the Professor's side.[133]
Heading Towards Academia
Yūto and Yūya are surprised finding out that they are part of Academia's plan.
Yūya and the others then briefed of what they have known so far and questioned why Leo was capturing Yuzu and the other girls who resembles her, pointing the question at Sora. Unfortunately, Sora didn't know either since the Professor refused to tell the details, but reminded the purpose of ARC Area Project which is to unite the Four Dimensions. From this information, Yūya concluded that in order to unite the four dimensions, Leo needed Yuzu, Serena, Ruri, and Rin, so if they save them, ARC Area Project won't be fulfilled.[134] Yūya then revealed that his father was currently at Academia, and Reiji finally explained everything that happened three years ago. He also revealed that he found a file containing Serena and Yūri with a project called "Revival Zero". Reiji theorized that Yūya and the other people who look like him is also involved in Academia's plan, surprising Yūya and Yūto.[135]
Survival Duel

Arriving at Academia, Yūya and the others were ambushed by Academia soldiers. While Sora, Reiji, and Reira, went ahead, Yūya and the rest stayed and overpowered the soldiers. However, they were soon got captured by a trap and then taken to a dome where an Academia instructor, Sanders, challenged them to a battle royal Duel with the losers being turned into cards, which was called Survival Duel. Without any choice, Yūya and the others agreed. While Tsukikage went first to know their surroundings, Yūya and the others contemplated of their next actions until they heard a scream. Worrying it was Tsukikage, they followed to where the scream came from. They then found an Academia student, Bernie, got carded, wondering who the culprit was since it was impossible to be Tsukikage. Noticing Ethan nearby and he ran away when being questioned, Shingo went after him, separating the Lancers again.

Yūya looked for Tsukikage with Gongenzaka, and soon heard Tsukikage's scream. By the time they arrived, Tsukikage has already been turned into card together with an Academia student, Ted. As he mourned for Tsukikage, Yūya noticed a message left by Tsukikage and deduced based from the message that there was someone else other than them and the Academia students and whoever it was, the third person was the one who carded Tsukikage. Now knowing for sure how dangerous it will be to go separately, Yūya and Gongenzaka agreed to stick together until they regroup with Shingo and Crow.[136]

Yūya and Gongenzaka found another student sealed into a card and he told Gongenzaka they had to find Shingo and Crow quickly due to the danger of staying separated.[137] They were able to find Shingo and Crow after Crow activated "Black Feather - Last Will", but the eleventh Duelist, Battle Beast, sealed Crowinto a card right after they arrived. Yūya and Gongenzaka challenged him to a Battle Royal Duel. Yūya brought out "Odd-Eyes" and attempt to destroyed "Gladial Beast Laquer", but Battle Beast used "Medallion of Gladial Beast" to prevent its destruction. He wondered what Battle Beast was planning after Battle Beast used the effect of "Laquer" to Special Summon "Gladial Beast Secutor".
"Odd-Eyes" was destroyed and Yūya lost LP due to "Pollice Verso". He continued to LP when his cards were destroyed by the effect of "Gladial Beast Gaizares", and Yūya attracted Battle Beast's attention, as Gongenzaka's Steadfast style would limit his defensive options. He tried going for Action Cards, but Battle Beast continuously blocked him. He was saved when Gongenzaka used the Action Card "Benkei Guard", though at the cost of restricting his Deck. Battle Beast furiously defeated Gongenzaka and prepared to seal him into a card, but then Jack arrived in the arena.[138]

He thanked Jack and learned that Amanda, Frank, and Tanner asked him to come help Crow but told him they should had been stronger when Jack learned what happened to Crow. When Sanders joined the Duel, Yūya prepared himself and wondered about Battle Beast. He told Jack how something's strange with Battle Beast. When Sanders revealed that the Professor ordered him to eliminate Yūya Sakaki at all cost, Yūya was shocked as this confirmed that he's indeed Academia's plan like Reiji has deduced. As "Gladial Beast Tamer Editor" was about to attack Yūya, who is in a daze, he noticed the attack and dodged it while going for an Action Card. He managed to grab one due to Battle Beast ignoring him and activated "Evasion" negating "Tamer Editor's" attack. He then returned to thinking again until Yūto appeared.

He told Yūto that he wondered what Leo wants the four of them for and explains how they always meet, including him and Yūto fused together. When he couldn't think of a reason, he thought that Leo might know something and the reason he wants them eliminated by name. He was sure its connected because they became one and terrible things happened. When Yūto mentioned how the hatred consumed Yūya when he noticed the other Duelist or when the Four Dimension Dragons came together, he heard a raging voice from the depths of his heart. Yūya wondered what the strange thing is at the bottom of his heart and was also sure Leo knew since he used his name.

He was then yelled at by Jack for looking away in a Duel and to talk about it in a Duel. Even Gongenzaka and Shingo told him not to forget their fallen comrades. He summoned "Entermate Pararhino" and uses the two effects of "Pararhino" to negate "Andabatae's" effects and Special Summoned "Entermate Gongcat" and made "Andabatae's" ATK match Gongcat. He attacked "Andabatae", but "Medallion of Gladial Beast" prevented the destruction, but doubles the battle damage. When Battle Beast activated "Gladial Beast Assault Fort", Yūya noticed something wrong with him again as he remembered his past and ended his turn. He was surprised when Battle Beast used the effect of "Tamer Editor" to destroy itself and attacked Sanders.[139]

When Battle Beast was going to card Sanders, Yūya tried to stop him, but was easily pushed away by Battle Beast. Yūya tried to talk out Battle Beast to stop the Duel by revealing that he actually doesn't want to fight. The only reason that Battle Beast was carding people was because he doesn't know any other way to protect himself after the painful mental struggle that Battle Beast had gone through under Sanders' teaching. While Sanders and the others dismissed this, Yūya could relate himself with Battle Beast because he also did the same to cope with his father's disappearance before.

Realizing that the only way to reach Battle Beast's heart is by showing a Duel that won't hurt anyone, Yūya started his Entertainment Dueling, using his two magic cards "Entermate Guard Dance" and "Entermate Pendulum Art and Clean", he slowly and gently coaxed Battle Beast to come out from his shell and freed him from his sadness. The Academia students who were impressed by Yūya's Dueling also decided to join them, apprehending Sanders. One of the students then escort Yūya to where the Professor is while Jack, Gongenzaka, and Shingo rest for a moment to regain their strength.[140] On the way to the Professor's place, Yūya instead decided to ask the Academia student where Yuzu was being held captive.[141]
Duel Against Ruri & Serena

After following the student's advice, Yūya ended up in a dark hall. He looked around as he saw Ruri, who he mistook for Yuzu, but Yūto corrected him by telling him that she's Ruri. After finding out that Shun has came to Academia as well but now is injured, Yūya asked her to escort him to Shun. Suddenly, Ruri instantly turned herself against Yūya and declared she will turn him into card, making Yūya and Yūto realised she was being controlled. Before they commence Duel, Yūya noticed that he has Yūto's cards in his deck and assumed that Yūto's strong feeling to save Ruri must have summoned his cards to his deck. Noticing "Parasite Fusioner" that Ruri used to perform Fusion summon, Yūya and Yūto concluded that the parasite is what controlling her and both determined to destroy it to save Ruri.

However, Shun, who was barely standing up, explained that he had fought Ruri and destroyed "Parasite Fusioner", but the result was still the same and the only way to free her is by defeating the one controlling the parasite. She quickly used "Lyrical Luscinia - Independent Nightingale" to finish Yūya off quickly, only for him to survive her assault and counterattacks with "Phantom Knights Cursed Javelin". Shun told Yūya and Yūto that he'll find the whereabouts of the one controlling Ruri, but Shun was struck down by Serena, who then told Yūya that she'll listen to him if he wins, interfered the Duel and summoned "Parasite Queen". As Yūya tried to use the same method to neutralize "Parasite Queen", Serena used her card and "Cursed Javelin" was destroyed.
Yūya switched bodies with Yūto.
Serena then tells Yūya that her brain was controlled by Academia's most genius scientist, Doctor, by using a parasite that he created and viciously explained to him that there's a Parasite Monster inside Yuzu's head as well. This enraged Yūya who almost lose himself to anger until Yūto calmed him down and the two switched bodies as they continued their counterattack together, determined to save the girls.[142] As Yūto and Yūya attacked, Serena and Ruri intensified their tactic, cornering both of them. The impact of the attack forcefully switched back Yūto and Yūya's bodies again. Unbeknownst to Yūya, one of Doctor's parasites fell onto his shoulder and slowly crawled into his ear.

Yūya quickly reached for an Action Card, but when he was about to activate it, one of Doctor's parasites went inside Yūya's brain and started to affect him. However, the darkness within Yūya killed the parasite, preventing it from controlling Yūya and thus, allowed Yūya to use the Action Card to survive. Doctor then showed up from the monitor and taunted Yūya by showing how Yuzu is now under his control. This was the last straw for Yūya. Unable to hold his rage any longer, Yūya let himself being possessed by the darkness and summoned a new Xyz-Pendulum monster, "Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon", that easily destroyed the entire parasite monsters on field and defeated both Serena and Ruri.
Yūya watches his father, Reiji, and Reira arrived in Leo' chambers.
When Yūya came to his senses, he was horrified to find both Serena and Ruri unconscious. He quickly rushed to them, but then got kicked away by Serena, and she and Ruri ran away. Yūya quickly gave a chase, arriving in a room where he was shocked to find Yuzu and the other girls with the Doctor. When he tried to approach them, Yūya got trapped inside a cell as he tried to call out for Yuzu, but she didn't respond, much to Yūya's dismay. As he could only watch Yuzu left with the other girls and Doctor, he was then shown how his father, Reiji, and Reira are faring at the moment from the monitor.[143]
The Origin of Four Dimensions
Yūya begins to awaken.
As Leo explained his past, Yūya and Yūto learned of the existence of the Original Dimension where all summoning methods existed but that world was destroyed by a Duelist named Zarc by fusing himself with his four dragons that each represents the four summoning methods. In the middle of explanation, "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" suddenly were glowing from Yūya's extra Deck. When Yūya tried to take a look at it, Yūya and Yūto entered their Awakening state as both Yūgo and Yūri, who were Dueling inside Academia, have summoned their dragons. Yūya and Yūto started to be possessed by the darkness and declared by using "Astrograph Magician", they will become one. Their awakening unleashed strong gusts of wind that destroyed the cage trapping them and blew away Edo and Kaito who arrived to help him.[144]

When Yūya regained his senses, he immediately headed to the Professor's throne room and has a happy reunion with his father after three years separated before informing his father of Yuzu's capture. As Yūshō asked Leo not to involve the children, Leo told Yūshō that Yūya was his son but at the same time he was also not, confusing both Yūya and Yūshō. Leo then proceeded to reveal Yuzu and her counterparts inside some capsules behind him, and they were freed from the Doctor's control after Leo carded the former. Rejoiced that Yuzu's mind was freed from the Parasite, Yūya tried to approach her, but was stopped by Leo who continued his story of how his daughter from the Original Dimension, Ray, sacrificed herself to stop Zarc, resulting their souls to be split into four dimensions.
Yūya and Yūto are shocked to learn they are Zarc's reincarnations.
To Yūya's shock, Yuzu and the others were the reincarnation of Ray and Leo was planning to revive Ray by consolidating live energies from people who were carded and gathered in his machine to create the fifth dimension, ARC-V, and then fused Yuzu and her counterparts into Ray. From this, Reiji realized that the Revival Zero that he found before was a plan to revive Ray. Furthermore, Leo also revealed that Yūya and his counterparts were the reincarnation of Zarc himself whose soul also got split up like Ray, shocking Yūya and Yūto.

Leo asked Reiji to fight together with him to defeat Yūya whom he deemed as nothing but a dangerous demon for being one of the four reincarnations of Zarc and will destroy the world once more. Yūya strongly denied of being a demon as he stated his wish is to bring smile and happiness to people with his Dueling. Reiji assured Yūya that he understood and knew that Yūya's Entertainment Duel has saved many people in their journey, relieving Yūya. Swearing to stop Leo and save the girls, Yūya and Reiji began their Duel against Leo.[145]
Yūya & Reiji vs. Leo

As Leo began his plan to fuse Yuzu and her counterparts, both Yūya and Yūto stated that they don't know about the original dimension nor Ray, but they couldn't forgive Leo for making Yuzu and the others suffer. Yūya requested Reiji to let him go first and he started his turn by summoning "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon". Yūto warned Yūya that the darkness that was trying to consume them was mostly likely Zarc. Yūya understood this and at the same time also knew that as long as they're not consumed by anger, then Zarc won't awake. When Leo once again warned Reiji of the world's destruction at Zarc's hand, Yūya confidently retorted that as long as he and Yūto are present, Zarc won't revive. He continued his defense that he and Yūto both want to bring smile with Duel and protect Yuzu and the other girls.

Leo then surprised Yūya and Reiji when he performed Pendulum Summoned, reducing their LP to 3200. As he did so, the machine that trapped Yuzu and the others began the process to fuse Yuzu and the others, their cries for help angered Yūya and Yūto, which inadvertently awakening Zarc inside them. Yūya and Yūto tried their best to fight against Zarc's control while continue the Duel, reminding each other that they had hold off Zarc's control before, so now they will do the same. Yūya told Reiji that he was still okay and started his next turn by summoning "Odd-Eyes" and "Entermate Fusiongolem" as he demanded Leo to stop the machine and free the girls. Unfortunately, Yūya and Yūto's resistance didn't last long as Zarc's power proved to be too strong for them. Zarc easily overpowered them and take control of the Duel and ruthlessly attacked Leo by Fusion Summoning "Entermate Gatlinghoul".[146]

However, his attack was negated by the Pendulum Effect of "Spirit Reactor" and Yūya set a card before ending his turn. He then used "Twin Big Shield" to protect "Gatlinghoul" but Leo used the effects of "Master Spirit Tech Force - Pendulum Ruler" and "Spirit Crystal - Sylphid Core" to destroy "Twin Big Shield" and doubled the damage. "Gatlinghoul" was then destroyed and when attacked directly Yūya went for Action Card, surprising everyone and used "Evasion" to dodge "Hell Armageddon's" attack. When Reiji tried to get him to snap of it, Yūya was able to make brief contact with him, pleading to Reiji to stop him should the worst happen before Zarc once again took over while threatening to bury Leo first.
Yūya got overwhelmed by Zarc.
Yūya, in Zarc's control, brought back "Odd-Eyes" and "Fusiongolem" and Summoned "Entermate Nightmare Knight", then overlaying them to Xyz Summon "Dark Rebellion". The presence of the Four Heavenly Dragons caused Yūya's dark aura took on form Supreme King Dragon Zarc's silhouette around him before dissipating. He then used "Phantom Knights Possession" to give "Dark Rebellion" a level and summoned "Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon". He used the effect of "Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon" to negate and destroy every card on the field except "Pendulum Ruler" and "Hell Armageddon", gaining 200 ATK for each destroyed card. Yūya destroyed "Hell Armageddon", but Reiji took the damage instead as Yūya learned that "Dis-swing Fusion" returned the damage to the monster's original owner.
Yūya got bound into pillars by "Binding Swords of Impact".
He was about to attack "Pendulum Ruler" due to "Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon" being able to attack twice per turn, but halted his attack when hearing Yuzu's plea to return to his senses. Unfortunately, when the girls' body started to disappear as the machine powered up, Yūya continued his attack and destroyed "Pendulum Ruler". He then used the effect of "Nightmare Knight" to inflict damage to all players who took battle damage this turn but was stopped by his father's prototype card, "Binding Swords of Impact", which terminated the Duel and bound Yūya to a pillar. [147] While Yūya continued to struggle, his pendant resonated as he felt Yūri and Yūgo nearby, telling Reiji to hurry up before Yūri and Yūgo arrive.[148]
Yūri vs. Yūshō
Yūya started to regain himself while watching his father's Entertainment Duel.
Not long after Reiji defeated Reira, Yūri, who was looking for him, arrived while blasting away Yūshō who was trying to stop him. Hearing Yūya calling Yūshō as his father, Yūri finally understood why Yūshō was so insistent to stop him and told Yūshō that it was pointless for him to stop their union since Yūya also wish to become one with him, a claim that Yūya strongly denied. While trying to hold off Zarc, Yūya could only watch his father dueling against Yūri.[149] As Yūya watched his father's Entertainment Dueling, Yūya finally regained his senses and cheered for his father as he told Yūto about the time when he first watched his father's Duel and assured him that his father will be all right.

Just when it seemed Yūshō on the verge of victory, Yūri revealed his true trump card: "Transcendental Fusion" to summon "Starve Venom Fusion Dragon" before Synchro summoned "Clear Wing Synchro Dragon". The summoning of the two dragons caused Zarc to started invading Yūya and Yūto's hearts again as Yūya watched Yūri torturing his father, shouting at Yūri to stop. Yūya finally reached his limit once Yūri defeated and carded Yūshō. Watching his father got carded, Yūya once again succumbed to Zarc's influence, breaking free from his binds and angrily confronted Yūri.[150]
Duel Against Yūri

Overwhelmed with rage, Yūya accepted Yūri's challenge without a second thought to take back his father. During his turn, Yūya drew "Smile World", which reminded him of his father's encouraging words. This allowed Yūya to calm down and barely endured Zarc's power. Summoning "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" caused a resonance between it and Yūri's "Starve Venom", but Yūya and Yūto still able to resist Zarc's influence despite the difficulty in doing so. Yūya declared attack on "Starve Venom" using "Odd-Eyes" with its ATK increased by the effect of "Entermate Drago Remora", inflicting 400 damage to Yūri, though he failed to destroy "Starve Venom" due to Yūri's trap card. In retaliation, Yūri summoned "Clear Wing" and intended to do the same vicious combo he did against Yūshō.
Yūya summoning "Dark Rebellion".
Aware of Yūri's vicious combo, Yūya used his permanent trap card "Starlight Force" to negate all effects of Yūri's monsters that he summoned from Extra Deck and decreased its level to 4, forcing Yūri to instead destroy "Odd-Eyes" and "Drago Remora". Knowing that sealing Yūri's monsters' effect wasn't enough to defeat him, Yūya and Yūto thought up a plan to summon "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon" and used its effect to defeat Yūri. Yūya hesitated to do so out of fear that they won't be able to hold off against Zarc's influence if their four dragons are present on field, since resisting three dragons' resonance was already difficult enough. Only until Yūto revealed how much faith he has in him that Yūya was convinced to summon "Dark Rebellion". Yūya was momentarily overwhelmed by the dragons' resonance, but able to stay true to himself by remembering his family and friends.

Unfortunately, much to Yūya's horror, Yūri activated his trap card that allowed him to take control of "Dark Rebellion". To make things worse, Yūto has fully succumbed to Zarc's influence, not only leaving only Yūya to fight but also making it harder for Yūya to resist Zarc's control.[151] Yūya nearly fell into Yūri's temptation to become one with him and momentarily got taken over by Zarc's power, resisting at the last moment by setting one card to end his turn thanks to Reiji who reminded him of Yūshō's last will. Yūri declared attack by using "Starve Venom" and "Clear Wing". As "Odd-Eyes" got destroyed by "Starve Venom", Yūya grabbed an Action Card, "Evasion", in attempt to negate "Clear Wing's" attack, but Yūri also used an Action Card, "No Action", to destroy Yūya's "Evasion", allowing "Clear Wing's" battle phase to continue that reduced Yūya's LP to 600.
Yūya lost his will to fight after discarding "Smile World".
Yūya still refused to give up as he denied Yūri's claim his wish to become one. Seeing Yūya in pinch, Reiji and Reira, together with Edo and Sora who just arrived, attempted to assist Yūya, but Yūri blew them away. Wanting to stop "Dark Rebellion's" attack without sacrificing "Smile World", Yūya once again tried to get and Action Card. Before Yūya could send "Miracle" to his graveyard and activate his trap card, Yūri activated his own Action Card, "Crush Action" that destroyed it. Without any option left, Yūya forced himself to send "Smile World" into graveyard to activate "Farewell" that gets him out of the pinch. Yūya greatly regretted this as he saw a vision of his father seemingly disappointed in him and leaving him. Yūya started to lose his hope due to his guilt as he felt he has betrayed his father until his friends rebuff his thinking, telling Yūya to win with his own Duelling.

Remembering his father's word to him to be himself and hearing encouraging words from his friends, Yūya continued the duel. Following Reiji's advice, Yūya focused only to win the Duel. Yūya summoned back "Odd-Eyes" with the addition of "Entermate Trap Mimic" and "Entermate Flat Rat". Using "Trap Mimic's" effect, not only he destroyed Yūri's trap card and retrieved "Dark Rebellion", he also used the trap card's effect to take control of "Clear Wing". Yūri activated his trap card "Predator Plants Reborn" to summon back "Predator Plants Stapelia Worm" whose effect will destroy "Dark Rebellion" the moment it activated its effect . Yūya changed "Stapelia Worm's" level to 5 using "Flat Rat's" effect before activating Treason Discharge. As Yūri activated "Stapelia Worm's" effect to destroy "Dark Rebellion", Yūya countered it by activating "Clear Wing's" effect to destroy it, allowing "Starve Venom's" ATK to be reduced.

Yūri activated his other set trap card, "Ridicule World" to increase Yūya's monster's ATKs that at the same time stopped them from attacking since their ATKs are higher than their original ATK. In retaliation, Yūya released "Flat Rat" to activate it's second effect to return one of his monster's original ATK. When Yūri told him that doing so would be useless because the moment "Starve Venom" got destroyed he will activate it's effect and inflict damage that will deplete his LP, Yūya reminded Yūri that the plan would only work if his LP still remains until the next turn. Choosing "Odd-Eyes" as the target of "Flat Rat's" effect, Yūya declared battle phase using "Odd-Eyes" with it's effect activated, destroying "Starve Venom" and defeated Yūri.
Yūya succumbs to Zarc's will.
After Yūri was defeated, Yūya approached him when Yūri offered Yūshō's card that he had promised to return if he beat him in Duel. Just when it seemed Yūya was going to take the card, it turned out that Yūya's decision to think nothing but winning the Duel following his friends' support has inadvertently allowed Zarc to fully take control of both his soul and body. With Yūya succumbed to Zarc's control, Zarc fused "Timegazer Magician" and "Stargazer Magician" into "Astrograph Magician", whose power fused Yūya and his counterparts, finally reviving Zarc as Supreme King Dragon Zarc.[152]
Fifth Dimension ARC-V Arc
Zarc vs. Sora & Edo
Sora and Edo confronted and challenged Zarc to a Duel following his rebirth. Zarc took a demonic form that resembles Yūya. When Sora questioned Zarc what happened to Yūya, Zarc revealed that Yūya was his reincarnation whose sole purpose was to aid his revival and he no longer exist now that purpose has been fulfilled.[153]
Zarc vs. Gongenzaka & Jack
Gongenzaka tried to reach for Yūya's heart by reminding him of his Entertainment Dueling that he inherited from Yūshō and how both of them have Dueled countless times in the past to polish their respective Dueling. This earned a response from Zarc who conceded to Gongenzaka's request to show his Entertainment Dueling, albeit violently. Gongenzaka and the others took Zarc's reaction as Yūya's soul trying to respond to them.[154]
Zarc vs.Leo & Reiji

Throughout the Duel, Yūya's soul inside Zarc was struggling against Zarc's control. When he heard Reiji and Shūzō's call that Yūya was the one who founded Pendulum Summon after Zarc claimed that he is actually the true founder, both Yūya and Zarc said they were wrong, stating that Pendulum Summon was born for Zarc's revenge, and when Yūya's cards changed into the first Pendulum Monsters and he performed Pendulum Summon in his Duel against Strong Ishijima, Zarc's soul awakened. From then on, he swore that he will win the next time he fight Ray.[155]
Ray & Reira vs. Zarc

Yūya's soul started to awaken when Ray and Reiji called for Yūya as Pendulum cannot be swung with malice alone and was actually created from both Zarc's desire for revenge clashing with the power of the four En Cards created by Leo that has the ability to return all power into pure existence. Yūya started to fight back against Zarc once he heard Yuzu's voice who reminded him of his true wish to bring happiness to people. Zarc rebuffed this statement and insisted that his wish is to bring terror to the people who had forced him to fight, something that Yūya believed it wasn't true. Yūya finally gained control after Yuzu reminded him how he far he went to save her that gave her strength and their promise to return to their hometown together.
Yūya activates "Smile Universe".
Now in control and with the help of his counterparts, Yūya drew and activated "Smile Universe" to summon back "Supreme King Dragon Zarc" and "Supreme King Servant Dragon Odd-Eyes" with their effects negated. Zarc tried to take control once more, but Yūya able to hold him back long enough to give Ray and Reira the total of his monsters' ATKs to them that increased their LP, allowing them to deliver the finishing blow. To prevent the same tragedy from happening again, Reira sealed Zarc's soul inside her body. Yūya was then was shown surrounded by white light as he shouted for Reira who suddenly disappeared after sealing Zarc.[156]
Pendulum Dimension

The world once again split into Four Dimensions, with Standard Dimension now reborn as Pendulum Dimension where everyone can use Pendulum Summoning. Yūya return to his normal life, losing the memories of the interdimensional war including Yuzu who has disappeared following Zarc's defeat. Yūya went to You Show Duel School and was welcomed by Shūzō with a whack of paper fan for being late three minutes. Yūya asked Shūzō since when he has the fan, but Shūzō himself didn't know. Ayu, Tatsuya, and Futoshi also noticed that Yūya has Roller Boots and asked where he got it, to which Yūya answered that someone gave it to him but he couldn't remember who.
Junior Youth Championship
Yūya meets Gongenzaka at LDS.
Together with children, Yūya started their lessons with a three versus one Duel, Yūya fighting the children alone. However, right before Yūya could start his Entertainment Duel, they got interrupted when Shūzō suddenly turned off the Action Field without a warning and informed Yūya that he was invited into Junior Youth Championship, prompting Yūya to go to LDS to register where he met Gongenzaka and Shingo who were also invited. Reiji then briefed them that the championship will be a Battle Royale between the four of them, the fourth participant's identity being kept a secret until the Battle Royale started.

The Battle Royale began with Wonder Quartet as their Action Field. Yūya and the others ended up at the Volcano area where they finally met their fourth opponent, Tsukikage. Yūya started his turn by summoning "Entermate Discover Hippo" and began to running around the field as he rode on his monster when he ended his turn while he then evading Shingo's attacks directed to him by having "Discover Hippo" finding Action Cards for him. As the Duel went on, Yūya and everyone who were watching the Duel began to regain their lost memories of the previous Battle Royale when the Academia invaded. Yūya soon got cornered by Tsukikage who relentlessly attacked him under Reiji's order, and barely survived.[157]

The Duel soon became a Tag Duel when Shingo decided to lend a hand to Tsukikage, which prompted Gongenzaka to team up with Yūya, reasoning that he did so not to save Yūya, but so he can personally defeat the Entertainment Duelist, a challenge that Yūya accepted. Yūya started his next turn by summoning "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and about to begin his counterattack. However, Yūya continuously got lost in thought as the memories of his journey in the other three dimensions resurfacing and he pondered for what reason he crossed dimensions. It wasn't until Shūzō announced to everyone that Yuzu was missing that Yūya finally remembered Yuzu and his reason crossing dimensions was for her sake. Remembering Yuzu caused more of Yūya's memories to return, including his actions as Zarc, which horrified him.[158]
Yūya fully regained his memories.
Fully regaining his memories, Himika and Reiji showed the infant Reira and explained that Reira has expelled Zarc from Yūya's body and sealed it into her own. The En Cards' purifying power reverted Reira into an infant and Zarc's presence caused the girl to be in a catatonic state and Zarc one day may revive again. To end Zarc's revival for good and save Reira, Reiji told Yūya that he must use his Entertainment Dueling to make Reira smile, believing that doing so will also pacify Zarc's soul and make him leave the girl's body. Yūya then asked about Yuzu's whereabouts, which Reiji answered that while he doesn't know where she is, he believed that she is still alive and well.

The revelation shocked Yūya and he began to question what he must do to save both Yuzu and Reira. His mother tried to lift up his spirit by reminding him of their promise to make everyone smile, but Yūya shouted at her to shut up as his mind in turmoil. Gongenzaka interrupted his thoughts and began his attack on Yūya, scolding Yūya's uncertainty and told him that let alone saving Yuzu and Reira, he can't become a pro if he keeps hesitating, to which Yūya retorted that he also wants to save Yuzu and Reira and the world, and he will do so even if nobody believes in him. Yūya and Gongenzaka began a race for Action Cards, each tried to precede one another while attacking each other.

Realizing that Gongenzaka was casting aside his Steadfast Dueling to encourage him, Yūya determined to answer his expectation. Yūya used "Pendulum Illusion" to continuously inflict 200 damage to Gongenzaka without destroying his monster at the cost unable drawing any card so he can only kept summoning back "Odd-Eyes". This loop continued until both of their LPs at low. Seeing an Action Card in front of them that will determine their victory, both tried to reach it. Yūya was able to reach the card since he jumped from "Odd-Eyes" back, which was higher than Gongenzaka, and then defeated the Steadfast Duelist.

Although winning the championship, Reiji has yet to approve Yūya into Youth Class because the championship was meant to be the continuation of the previous Maiami Championship, so Yūya must fight against the Duelists that Reiji has chosen as Lancers based on the selection. Reiji took Yūya to a dimension corridor that connected to Xyz Dimension, explaining that remnants of ARC-V still remained and connected to other dimensions via wormhole. The corridor will take Yūya to Xyz Dimension where Yūya presumed that he will be dueling Shun next. Thinking that Yuzu and the other girls are still inside ARC-V, Yūya became determined that he will win against any opponents he will face if it means he can save the girls and the world. When he reached the Xyz Dimension, however, he was surprised that Dennis was the one who was waiting instead of Shun.[159]
Duel Against Dennis

Hearing from Sayaka and Allen that Shun went to Fusion Dimension to look for Ruri, Yūya was ready to depart until Dennis challenged him to a Duel. Learning that Dennis used to be his father's student urged Yūya to accept his challenge. While dueling, Yūya was made surprised and confused by Dennis' threatening behaviour towards the residents of Heartland who were watching their Duel and even used "Antique Gear" card. Edo explained to Yūya that the Academia's invasion has made the Heartland citizens refused to forgive Academia despite their atonement and condemned Dueling as whole due to their trauma. When Edo told Yūya that he wished Yūya can converse with the citizens through Duel, Yūya realized that Dennis was trying to boost the citizens' morale and sooth their pain by playing the bad guy.

Yūya began his Entertainment Dueling, summoning back his destroyed "Odd-Eyes" and with the addition of "Entermate Miracle Mirrorabbit". Using "Mirrorabbit's" effect, Yūya enabled "Odd-Eyes" to attack twice and destroyed Dennis' "Entermage Trapeze Force Witch". Yūya then told Dennis to show his true self, making Dennis dropped his bad guy act and started his own Entertainment Dueling. Dennis summoned "Entermage Trapeze Magician", which Yūya quickly destroyed using the same tactic, but to his surprise, Dennis was waiting for his attack to activate his Rank-Up Magic to summon "Entermage Trapeze High Magician". The magician's continuous attacks reduced Yūya's LP to 100 with the magician foiled each of Yūya's attempt to get an Action Card, but Yūya survived at the last second using Pendulum Effect to negate the battle damage.

As Dennis and "Trapeze High Magician" flew to the top of Heartland Tower, Yūya summoned back his monsters and then activated two Continuous Magic Cards: "Hope Stairs" and "Challenge Stairs". Yūya initially intended to use "Synthesis Magician's" effect to change "Entermate Sword Fish's" level to 4 so he can summon "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon", but changed his mind and instead attack using "Odd-Eyes" as he made his way to the top of the tower. By continuously using his two Continuous Magic Cards' effect to enable "Odd-Eyes" attacking five times and increased its ATK each time it attacks, Yūya defeated Dennis and they successfully restored the citizens' love for Dueling. When the children were gathering around asking him to teach them Entertainment Duelling, Yūya instead told them that Dennis will teach them in his stead and he then departed to Fusion Dimension to Duel Shun.[160]
Duel Against Shun
Yūya explains to Shun about Ruri's connection with Ray.
Arriving in Academia of Fusion Dimension, Yūya was horrified to see the destruction caused by Zarc and blamed himself for it. He then met Sora who brought him to Shun who was demanding for Leo to return Ruri with Asuka trying to stop him. Yūya and Sora explained to Shun about Ray and Ruri being one of her reincarnations. When Shun accused them of trying to imply that his memories with Ruri were merely illusions, Yūya denied so as he also felt the same way about his memories with Yuzu. He then requested Shun to Duel him so he can save both Reira and Yuzu, but Shun insisted that he wanted to meet Leo first. To convince Shun of the truth they allowed him to meet Leo who was trying to revive Ray, whose body was still inside the ARC-V Reactor.
Yūya is shocked to hear that Yūto, Yūgo, and Yūri weren't revived.
However, Leo revealed that he wasn't sure if she was really Ray because after Zarc was defeated, he was only revived as Yūya. This shocked Yūya who came into realization that Yūto, Yūgo, and Yūri never returned following Zarc's defeat with Leo deducing that the fact only Yūya got revived was most likely because Yūya was Zarc's main host and Ruri and the other girls were most likely also ceased from existence. Grieving over his sister and best friend's apparent death, Shun accepted Yūya's challenge, holding Yūya partially responsible for once being Zarc. Understanding Shun's sadness, Yūya accepted Shun's words without any retort and promised he will never appear in front of him again if he lose.

Shun immediately inflict 300 damage at the start of his turn that Yūya tried to stop by using Action Card, but Shun negated with his own Action Card. Yūya started his turn by summoning "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Synthesis Magician". He used "Synthesis Magician's" effect to make her own ATK same as "Odd-Eyes" and then used the dragon to destroy Shun's "Raid Raptors - Rudder Strix". However, Shun negated the attack and summoned two more "Rudder Strixes" that inflicted 600 damage to Yūya. Shun summoned "Raid Raptors - Rise Falcon" and destroyed "Odd-Eyes" before Yūya can get an Action Card. He proceeded to attack "Synthesis Magician", but Yūya used Action Cards "Miracle" and "Anchor" to prevent destruction and halve the damage he took.

Yūya summoned back "Odd-Eyes" and "Scales Magician", and then destroyed "Rise Falcon" with his dragon, which allowed Shun to activate his Rank-Up Magic to summon "Raid Raptors - Revolution Falcon" that destroyed "Odd-Eyes". In response to his dragon's destruction, Yūya released his two magicians to summon "Odd-Eyes Lancer Dragon" and used its effect to negate "Revolution Falcon's" effect and Action Card, destroying "Revolution Falcon". Shun once again activated Rank-Up Magic in retaliation, summoning Rank 12 "Raid Raptors - Final Fortress Falcon". Yūya returned all of his monsters on his field back to his hand to negate "Final Fortress Falcon's" two consecutive attacks.

However, Shun was still able to attack one more time while Yūya didn't have any monster left on his field to activate "Lancer Dragon's effect". This forced Yūya to activate his Trap Card "Cross Damage" that inflicted equal damage of the attack to both him and Shun. Sora and Asuka thought that the duel resulted in a draw, Yūya was revealed to have survived the attack with his LP barely at 50 while Shun was defeated. Seconds before the attack could hit him, Yūya turned out to have activated "Lancer Dragon's" effect by sending all cards on his hand to the Graveyard to prevent destruction and the damage he took was halved, and Shun received the damage that Yūya took.

Yūya helped Shun to stand while noting it was his his victory, but then was surprised when Shun decided not to give up on Ruri because he just found a new hope: He briefly sensed Yūto's presence inside Yūya moments before he got defeated, which means Yūto was still alive within him and Ruri possibly was alive as well whether she was inside Ray or Yuzu. With this newfound hope, Yūya promised Shun he will save both Yuzu and Ruri. He was interrupted by Jack who told Yūya that he can't save anyone in his current state.[161]
Rematch Against Jack

Being told by Jack that he was a coward for being afraid of summoning the four dragons, Yūya admitted that he was unwilling to do so out of fear that Zarc's soul within Reira will awaken, so he decided to find a way to make Reira smile without summoning the dragons. Jack then challenged Yūya to a Duel, demanding him to use the four dragons in the Duel. Already anticipating this, Reiji materialized Duel Courses across dimensions called Dimension Highway that are connected by the remains of ARC-V. Crow brought Yūya's D-Wheel and suits that he used in the Friendship Cup for him to wear. Aware of the fact that he failed to make Reira smile in his previous two Duels, Yūya accepted the challenge.

Yūya started his turn by summoning "Odd-Eyes", "Drago Remora", and "Entermate Odd-Eyes Minotaur". Yūya sensed that the other three dragons: "Dark Rebellion", "Clear Wing Synchro Dragon", and "Starve Venom Fusion Dragon" wanted to come out, but he insistently against summoning them as he remembered that the dragons wanted to be summoned so Zarc can be awakened like before. For this reason, Yūya didn't perform Xyz Summon even though "Drago Remora" and "Minotaur" have the same level 4, and instead attack Jack by using the combination of "Drago Remora" to increase "Odd-Eyes's" ATK and decrease Jack's "Red Daemon's Dragon Scarlight's" ATK, but Jack able to negate destruction and retaliate by destroying Yūya's "Minotaur" with Yūya using "Drago Remora's" effect to negate Dragon type monsters on his Field.

Jack told Yūya he will give him one more chance to summon the four dragons, but once again, Yūya refused, retorting that not only for Reira's sake, if the dragons are assembled, something bad might happen to Ray and the other girls inside the reactor's core. Yūya attacked Jack with the same tactic, which disappointed Jack who summoned "Red Daemon's Dragon Tyrant" whose ATK overpowered Yūya's "Minotaur". As Yūya was facing the incoming attack, Yūya heard Yūto, Yūri, and Yūgo's voices inside him who were questioning his ignorance of their dragons' feelings and urging him to listen to their dragons' voices. Yūya then summoned "Entermate Odd-Eyes Dissolver" to negated destruction and damage.

Listening to their voices reminded Yūya that they were originally one person, so even though the evil has been purged from their hearts, it doesn't change the fact that he himself was still Zarc who can communicate with Duel Monsters. Finding his resolve, Yūya finally summoned all the four dragons at once. The moment they were summoned, Yūya could feel that instead of anger, the dragons' voices showed that they were afraid of Ray and that's why they wanted to stop Ray's revival. Yūya assured the dragons not to be afraid because they were already strong enough even without becoming the Supreme King Dragon, promising that he will prove it to them.[162]

Yūya used "Starve Venom's" effects to steal "Red Daemon's Dragons's" effects and added the total of their ATKs to its own, which Jack able to counter with his Trap Card. Already expecting the counter, Yūya then used all of "Dark Rebellion's" Overlay Units to reduced half of their ATKs once more and added it to "Dark Rebellion" before attacking with "Starve Venom", "Dark Rebellion", and "Clear Wing", but Jack was able to survive from each of the three consecutive attacks by using Action Cards. With "Odd-Eyes" being the only one left capable to attack, Yūya once again declared battle phase. Jack activated an Action Card to overpower "Odd-Eyes", so Yūya tried to grab an Action Card to foil it. The card was too high for him to reach, but he was fortunately helped by "Clear Wing" who let Yūya to ride on its back, making it high enough for Yūya to reach the Action Card that increased "Odd-Eyes's" ATK and used it to defeat Jack.[163]
The Last Duel
Yūya asked Reiji to let him take the final test immediately.
Despite mastering the four dragons and winning the Duel, Jack told Yūya that he still couldn't hear the cry of Yūya's soul, leaving Yūya confused. Seeing Reiji arrived with Himika and Reira, Yūya asked whether Reira was smiling or not, but much to his dismay, Reira was still in the same condition. As Yūya pondered what did he lack to make Reira smile, Reiji allowed Yūya to take the final test to advance to Youth Class. Cannot wait to make Reira smile, Yūya requested Reiji to let him take the test right at that moment, and Reiji granted that request by revealing that he himself will be his opponent, and Reiji chose the Action Field that they once used in their first Duel as their stage.

As the challenger, Yūya got the first turn and he quickly summoned the four dragons while Reiji summoned his three "DDD Hell Armageddon" monsters that he quickly used to attack. During the first attack on "Starve Venom", instead of using his roller boots, Yūya jumped onto "Starve Venom's" hand and has the dragon took him to where the Action Card was. Using the Action Card, "Evasion", Yūya negated the attack. In the second attack, Yūya quickly jumped onto "Clear Wing" to grab "Miracle" that halve the damage he took. Lastly, he took "High Dive" as he landed on "Dark Rebellion" and increased its ATK with it, making it higher than "Hell Armageddon" and destroyed it.

While thanking the dragons for their help and noticed how happy they were for finally understanding each other, Yūya found the feelings nostalgic and remembered that he had felt the same way when he was Zarc. He came into realization that Zarc had actually wanted to entertain the audience, his opponents, and the monsters alike, but the people's selfish demands for more violent Duels caused Zarc to choose the wrong path that eventually turned him into a demon Duelist. Yūya cried as he finally understood that what Zarc truly wanted to accomplish wasn't to bring destruction to the world, but to bring smile to everyone with his Dueling.[164]

Using "Whitest's" effect, Reiji destroyed "Starve Venom", "Clear Wing", and "Dark Rebellion", and soon after destroyed "Odd-Eyes" as well. Yūya once again asked for his counterparts' support and managed to draw "Odd-Eyes Fusion Gate" to perform Pendulum Fusion summon using "Odd-Eyes" and "Starve Venom", summoning "Odd-Eyes Venom Dragon". Even after using its effect to overpower it, Yūya still failed to destroy any of his monsters due to Reiji's counter effect that instead destroyed "Odd-Eyes Venom".

However, Yūya then used the Magic Card's effect to activate "Odd-Eyes Synchro Gate" to Synchro summon "Odd-Eyes Wing Dragon", and later followed by purposely letting the dragon got destroyed to activate "Odd-Eyes Xyz Gate" to Xyz summon "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon". By banishing the three Magic Cards, Yūya not only increased "Odd-Eyes Rebellion's" ATK, but also able to attack three times. However, "Purplish's" effect prevented the "Ultimate Doom Kings" to be destroyed as long as the Xyz-Pendulum monster is still standing on the Field.
Yūya activates "Entermate Performance".
Reiji once again destroyed "Odd-Eyes Rebellion", leaving Yūya without any monster and no card in his hand. Yūya survived against Reiji's attack using the Trap Card, "Entermate Performance", he has set to negate the damage and then placed "Odd-Eyes Rebellion" in Pendulum Zone before using its Pendulum effect to place "Entermate Five-Rainbow Magician" in the other Pendulum Zone to summon back his Pendulum Monsters. Yūya then used "Five-Rainbow Magician's" effect to not only make all monsters on the Field's ATK to 0 but also preventing both himself and Reiji from using Trap and Magic Cards until either of them set five cards on the Field.
Yūya picks his fourth Action Card.
Yūya and Reiji began racing for Action Cards, trying to set five cards first before the other. Yūya then began running through the Field to get five Action Cards necessary despite being hindered by Reiji and landing on wrong the area that preoccupied him. Once both Yūya and Reiji set four cards and only need one more, both of them tried to reach the necessary fifth Action Card. Yūya got the fifth Action Card and set it first, doubling all of his monsters' ATKs and prevented Reiji from setting any card. With his monsters' ATK now above Reiji's "Ultimate Doom Kings", Yūya attacked them. Reiji sent a monster to his Graveyard to finally set give cards and doubling his monsters' ATKs above Yūya's and returned "Odd-Eyes Pendulum's" ATK to normal.
Yūya launches "The Arc of Light".
Yūya remained calm and then stated that "Odd-Eyes" will become stronger through power that he called "The Arc of Light". Yūya activated "Entermate Ignition Eagle's" Pendulum effect, returning their monsters' ATKs to normal. Furthermore, "Odd-Eyes's" ATK is increased for every Pendulum Monster on Yūya's Field. While he couldn't destroy Reiji's monsters, Reiji still took damage and "Odd-Eyes's" effect doubled the damage he received, defeating Reiji. Following Yūya's victory, Zarc's soul was finally pacified as Reira's laugh was heard throughout the whole dimensions from the monitor. Winning the Duel, Reiji announced to everyone that Yūya has passed the pro test, officially making him a Professional Duelist, much to everyone's joy.
Yūya declares he will surpass his father as Entertainment Duelist.
His Entertainment Dueling earned reaction from Ray who then transported herself, her father, and Yūya's family and friends across dimensions into the Maiami Stadium in Pendulum Dimension. Yūya was surprised when Ray, surrounded by light suddenly appeared before it then turned into happiness as he saw Yuzu emerged from the light with her counterparts all now residing inside her body like Yūya did with his counterparts, finally reunited with her as he welcomed her back. Yūshō then appeared and said that becoming a Pro Duelist is not the end, but the beginning of the fun itself before he challenged his son to a Duel. Yūya accepted his father's challenge, declaring he will continue bringing smile with his Dueling and surpass his father as an Entertainment Duelist, stating his usual catchphrase that the fun has just begun.[165]
Powers and Abilities
Agility -As an Action Duelist, Yūya is very acrobatic and fit, having participated in physical training regimes at You Show Duel School. He can effortlessly jumped from a high place to another while still maintaining his balances.

Communication with Duel Monsters - Being the reincarnation of Zarc, Yūya also inherited Zarc's ability to communicate with his monsters to a certain degree, though not as strong as Zarc since Yuya could only vaguely sensing them. This is demonstrated whenever Yūya saw a glimpse of his monsters before summoning them, which mostly resulted with Yūya summoning and gaining new special summoned monsters. The communication between them guided Yūya to find the right strategy to continuously defeat his opponent. After becoming one with his counterparts, Yūya is able to fully use this ability, able to converse normally with the dragons and understand perfectly what they are feeling. This allowed Yūya to coordinate his movements with them to gain advantage on the field.

Synchronization -Being in possession of one of Four Heavenly Dragons and related with their status as Dimensional counterparts, Yūya shows the ability to link his mind with his dimensional counterparts. In this state the personalities of both are mixed and each adopt some mannerisms of the other, speaking and moving in the same manner. This also influenced their Dueling styles, mirroring each other. When the Duel ends, the one whom Yūya synchronized with doesn't realise of the synchronisation, but Yūya able to remember, though since it happened through his mind, Yūya initially believed that it was only a dream.
TheAwakening - Like his dimensional counterparts, Yūya has the ability to enter the Awakened state. This state is triggered unconsciously, with Yūya having no recollection of what happened while entering the state. Unlike Yūto and Yūgo, the state was initially triggered not because Yūya being influenced by his Dragon (though when fighting Makoto and Ken he nearly enter it due to "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon"), but rather it was initiated by Yūto who is residing in his body. After witnessing Yūto's memories of the day the tragedy befell his homeland, Heartland, Yūya's main trigger for his awakening is whenever he's remembering Yūto's memory or anything similar happened that reminds him of the tragedy. After he was aware of the existence of the two souls within him, Yūya gained a degree of control over his awakened state by sheer force of will. There are multiple stages of Yūya's Awakening:
First Stage.
First Stage: Yūya's irises barely glows and unlike the other stages, Yūya is not filled with anger or contempt or any negative thoughts and quite in control of himself while also becoming more serious and confident. This stage is only shown once during his Duel against Strong Ishijima. As he entered this state, he also gained the ability to Pendulum Summon. Like most stages, however, Yūya has no recollection of what he has done while in this state.
Second Stage.
Second Stage: Yūya becomes collected and cold, speaking no more than necessary. Additionally, his hair frizzled and his voice deeper, both his iris and pupils glow and mute any natural shine to them. Yūya's Duelling becomes more straightforward in attacking his opponent. When under influence by the darkness, dark aura also surrounds his body for a moment before it dissipated.
Third Stage.
Third Stage: Yūya's hair sticks upwards, his pupils glow white, and the influence of the darkness is stronger, resulting Yūya's body being constantly surrounded by a dark aura. While Yūya's Duelling skill increased, he becomes vicious and even sadistic, enjoying to inflict harm on his opponents. He is also capable of unleashing powerful shockwaves that are beyond normal for a person originating from the Standard Dimension. This stage also gives Yūya a strong tolerance of pain, able to stand up and barely feeling hurt even after he continuously got attacked.
Fourth Stage.
Fourth Stage: Unlike the four previous stages, this stage requires all of Yūya's counterparts to be present near him or at least on the same area. Yūya pupils will glow even brighter and the dark aura surrounding him is darker and stronger than before. Yūya's anger in this stage grows to an almost primal rage, he become impervious to reason. This stage takes such a toll on their bodies and minds that their eyes becoming dull and empty as the glow fades, and all of them pass out afterwards. Anything he is in contact with also gain black aura, in the same manner as Yūya. Similar as the third stage, this stage also gives Yūya a strong tolerance of pain, able to stay conscious for a moment even after receiving a strong shockwave.
Fifth Stage.
Fifth Stage: Yūya's eyes become completely red. Yūya is surrounded by thicker dark aura and start behaving like Zarc, wanting to show his own strength and ruthlessness to his opponents for his own pleasure. This stage was triggered by Zarc when he momentarily possessed Yūya.
Sixth Stage: Yūya's pupils become white, his hair once again stick upwards, and surrounded by a thicker dark aura. At this level of extreme rage, Yūya gained unnatural strength, able to broke free from "Binding Swords of Impact" and destroyed the concrete pillars in the process.
Seventh Stage.
Seventh Stage: Yūya's eyes completely white out and glow red like his counterparts. He is constantly surrounded by a dark aura and instantly release intense dark shockwaves or strong gusts of wind from his body. This stage takes a toll on Yūya's mind as he and his counterparts's mind are connected and the Four Dimension Dragons are present on the field and resonating with one another. This is the closest stage to Zarc's awakening and the hardest to resist.
Final Stage.
Final Stage: At this point and onward, Zarc has taken full control of Yūya. With Yūya's veins sprouting and sports a wicked appearances. Yūya's eyes became completely red out and glows even brighter and the dark aura he unleashes is far stronger than his previous awakening. At this stage, Zarc is capable of summoning "Astrograph Magician" without the use of Duel Disk and use its power to become Supreme King Dragon Zarc.
Deck
Yūya's Entermate Monsters.
Yūya uses a "Entermate" Deck, which consists of animals dressed in carnival attire, referencing his passion for entertaining people. Though most of his monsters have relatively low ATK, they have various useful effects to fit a variety of situations such as allowing multiple attacks, ATK/DEF manipulation, etc. Yūya also uses Trap Cards in the same manner, though they commonly require monsters on his side to be destroyed to work properly, taking advantage of the fact that Pendulum Monsters are sent to the Extra Deck when destroyed. Due to the way he Duels, Yūya doesn't have many Magic Cards in his own deck, opting to use Action Cards he finds on the field to circumvent this. In fact, Yūya claims that one of his specialties in Action Duels is his ability in finding Action Cards. During the Duel against the Strong Ishijima, Yūya gained access to the Pendulum Summon mechanic to Summon multiple monsters at once. When Pendulum Summoning, he typically uses a combo with "Magician" Pendulum Monsters to Pendulum Summon monsters of a wide array of levels.
Yūya's favored strategy typically involves getting two Pendulum Monsters with a great difference in scale (usually "Stargazer Magician" and "Timegazer Magician") and after setting them in the Pendulum Zones, promptly Pendulum Summoning as many monsters as possible. To this end, he often stalls as long as possible until he can get those cards in his hand. He later starts including cards that allow him to change which cards are set in his Pendulum Zone so he can switch his strategy depending on the situation.
After his encounter with Yūto, he obtained "Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon", adding Pendulum-Xyz Summoning to his deck, which he used for the first time against Isao Kachidoki when unintentionally invoking Berserk Mode. After that, he tends to use more Scale 3 or lower Pendulum Monsters to bring more Level 4 Monsters to Pendulum-Xyz Summon "Xyz Dragon", some of which support Xyz Monsters. During Yūya's duel against the Obelisk Force, he gains "Synthesis Magician" and "Antithesis Magician", the latter of which allows him to change his Xyz Monster's Rank to Levels, enabling him to Xyz Summon more powerful and notorious Xyz/Pendulum Monsters, like "Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon the Supreme King Black Dragon."
Yūya's Deck now includes more ways to Fusion Summon his "Pendulum Dragon" monsters and is even capable of using Pendulum Summoning to perform both a Fusion Summon and an Xyz Summon in one turn. His Deck now includes more "Odd-Eyes" monsters, even some that are not Dragon-Type. Though he still uses Action Cards, his Deck contains a larger quantity of Magic Cards than before.
Prior to his Duel against Shinji Weber, Yūya added the "Tuning Magician" card that Sam gave to him to his Deck. During that Duel he gained the ability to Pendulum-Synchro Summon "Enlightenment Paladin", making him the second known Duelist to use all four specialized Summoning methods. But he don't use any trap cards.
During his Duel against Ruri Kurosaki and Serena, Yūya borrowed Yūto's "Phantom Knights" Deck. Yūto would continue to use it after taking over for Yūya mid-Duel.
Yūya's hair is made a joke out of, because it's green on the top and red color on the bottom, making it look like a tomato on Yūya.
In the first episode of Abridged Series, this was used as reference, to joke as Yūya says "Year of the Tomato", referring the series is about him. Also, in the Fruit Salad of Friendship, he is the Tomato.
In the Abridged Series, Ishijima called Yūya a vegetable freak until corrected by him that tomato is a fruit. This also shows that Yūya doesn't deny nor feeling offended by the similarity.
In Yu-Gi-Oh! collaboration drink menu, the drink that was based on Yūya is a tomato juice.
Yūya has a habit of putting his goggles over his eyes when he is either upset or embarrassed, something he did since he was young.
When Yūya Duels, he announces "Ladies and Gentlemen!" when he is about to perform a finishing move. This was actually a catchphrase created impromptu.
Many people initially mistook Yūya as a girl when seeing his picture at the anime cover.
Even though Yūya was officially confirmed to be male after Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V was released, few of them, especially some non-Yu-Gi-Oh! fans, still mistaken him as a girl.
His current self shares the same voice actor as his Fusion Dimensional counterpart, Yūri, while his child self shares the same voice actor as his Synchro Dimensional counterpart, Yūgo.
Strangely, despite their lack of interactions in the series so far, Yūya often interacts with Serena in the manzai episodes.
Yūya is one of the only four known Duelist in the series so far capable of mastering all four Summoning methods. The other four being Reiji, Reira, and Zarc.
Initially when initiating Fusion Summon, Yūya was using similar pose as most Fusion users by holding his hands together. Ever since his rematch against Reiji, he no longer does this pose. However, after Yūya became one with Yūri, he started to mimic Yūri's pose.
According to interview with Yūya's voice actor, Kenshō Ono, he has several wishes regarding Yūya in future episodes:
He stated that his favourite part when voicing Yūya is when Yūya is Awakened and he wishes for Yūya to appear more in that state in later episodes or another Duel that ends with Yūya completely unable to control his anger. This was fulfilled in Fusion Dimension Arc.
He wishes to see a Duel where Yūya single-handedly defeat his opponent without any damage instead of defeating his opponent when in pinch like usual.
He and Director Ono would like to see a Duel between Yūya and Yūri, thinking that it would be interesting to watch. In Kenshō's case, he is interested because he is the one voicing both characters. This wish was fulfilled from Episode 134 until Episode 135.
In Episode 134, he is shown with 15 face-down cards behind "Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon" and "Entermate Drago Remora", likely indicating he has filled his Extra Deck up. But he has only used and owned 10 completely different Extra Deck Monsters so far. Provided only one copy of each of those cards exists.
In V-Jump Yu-Gi-Oh! Protagonists Popularity Poll, Yūya ranked 4th.
